Aeronaut F9F Panther Flight Report

Finally had some time and decent weather to take the Panther out for a spin. I tried once before winter set in to fly her but didnt get a good range check so that was cancelled.

This time she was cooperative and ready to rumble
Short story, 2 succesful flights completed

I was alone at the field so the video camera was mounted onto the tripod so footage isnt too great. Will get better later.

Flight 1:

Set idle, hit release and off we went. Had based on Gregg's elevator trim experiences dialed in 1mm of downtrim which seemed to be almost right on. A couple of aileron clicks and she was tracking straight. Power was gooood, most of the flight was done at below 50% stick. Flew a few circuits untill timer went off (set at safe 2min) but needed atelast 5 go arounds before I could set her down, missing the field by 300' Slippery little bugger!

Landed after a total of 4mins, recharged 860mAh!

Flight 2:

Same as flight 1 but tried spoilerons on landing. Did not need down elevator to compensate for the pitch up. Felt safe and smooth. Did not slow the model down much but I didnt force her into high AoA either playing it safe. Missed the field by 250' this time mainly due to a short powerboost to clear some rough spots.

Recharged 780mAh after almost 5mins in the air. Batteries were barely warm after flight, they come off the charger hotter

Launched it using the JePe bungee/wheeled axle with pedal release.

Overall impression : Felt very light and nimble. With CG at 67mm she was pitch sensitive but comfortable. I'dnt go further back on CG though. At 900W HOC there is plenty of power available which strickly speaking isnt required. Power this baby with a light 5-600W system and you'll have a ball.

Setup:
80oz RTF
Hacker B50-16L motor
DS-51-DIA-3ph fan unit
Kontronik Beat 50-8-30 ESC
20x FAUP's
HS225 on elevator / HS81's on ailerons.
Graupner C17 FM reciever/MC20 transmitter

woohoo!
slippery isn't she
i've found that i'm using about 500mah per minute on average.
it seems with a high power set up, they fly with a high degree of efficiency (mah wise).
on landing i've had to go around at least once every flight.

btw: with the tripod video we can't hear the cameraman yell " not at my head"........gregg

Looks great! 780 mah after 5 minutes?? Amazing! That is less than 10 amps current draw or about 42 watts per pound average. With all due respect sounds a little boring

Yesterday was fun for sure! Better video will come when chance wants it. Thanks all.

Btw - speed is 85mph when it goes directly over the camera, this was at about 70% throttlestick. (Gregg - cant play chicken with a tripod...)

Regarding batterydrain, the latter half of each flight was landing patterns so consumption is low, but when the charger said it was done after flight #1 and reported 860mAh back in I was surprised. Even more so when only 780 went back in after flight #2 which lasted 4m30s. Boring? maybe Scale flyby's are just as impressive as fast flyby's IMHO

Yes Ralle, its now ready for paint finally.

Greg,
Your Panther was a really nice flyer. Makes me want one.
Too many jets, not enough time.

Cool video Haldor!
It shows just how much time you have for jumping out of the way of any ordnance thrown at you from a ground attack jet .... like not very long

Your Panther flies really smoothly. Ref scale fly-bys, you're right. These old jets are best flown gracefully to give you time to admire their cool lines as they go by.
