Yes, 2 layered and no spar. I did cut into both layers to get the servo flush with the wing.

When I find lift I try to just keep my speed up. Not try to climb but let the thermal do the work.

Can you elaborate on the specifics of this build? This is really exactly what I'd like to get together in the short term. Its simplicity is lovely and the performance speaks for itself.

From your post history, what I gather is the wing is 2-layers of DTFB sandwiched using non-foaming GG. Paper still in place on the outer surfaces. Popsicle stick peg. Correct?

3/32 balsa tails... no film or coating of any kind? Looks like just a hinge in the pics.

I saw one of your builds using a UMX brick. That's brilliant if it works!

On setups with a return spring on the tail surfaces, I've not been able to find reference pics of how that's done. From what I understand, it's just a 0.5mm music wire, but I'm not following how or where it's mounted. (noob question... trying to get up to speed here!)

I like to build simple easy and light. These builds are for easy launching and thermaling. Not built for hard launches, rough landings, or bad weather.

Two layered wing works best for me. Laminated with white Gorilla glue and paper on the outside. I like 1/16' bare balsa for the tail. Tape hinges all around. I find it easier to use 1mm carbon rod to the rudder/elevator. If you like to use a spring then .015"(.38mm) works.

The UMX brick works fine if you have some laying around
1.5m Umx (7 min 55 sec)

Popsicle stick throwing blade sanded thinner works great.

My next wing will have the 5330 servos laminated inside. Should look cleaner.

@Six. For a spring, bend the wire into a square u shape. Then fold the elevator/rudder all the way over like a taco shell, then poke the wire U in, one leg in each side. Some glue might help keeping it in.
How long the mid section of the U is dictate strenght of spring, also depending on wire size. Experiment.

@boa,

Very helpful, thank you.

Are the wings glued directly to the shaft with no support?

@ffog, thank you. that helps!

Here ya go man. All you’d ever need to know. I use T springs myself to avoid warping the tail surfaces. Works awesome. C spring is what boa is referring to.

I also use the inserted aluminum tubes on glassed foam tails mentioned there. Works awesome as well.

Yes, just clear packing tape and white GG. I do sand the wing root to match the 6mm carbon tube boom.

A straight wing also works. You really just need to experiment.

1.5m foam DLG (2 min 38 sec)

If you get all your material ready you should be able to do a complete build in a day or two.

Maiden

That was a fast build. Here is the Maiden. Needs more dihedral or just make it poly.
