This guy scares me!



At 4:07 he grabs the rudder and other times later on.
Is this something other people do?

Hmmm ... over controlled on some of the manuvers and no spotter.

A single gust of wind, the tail strikes and the prop flops over on him. Not good.
What ever happened to separation between pilot stations and runway?

Like mentioned already, that would only be scary if I was there and would have to decide if I should call an ambulance or have him bleed all over my car on the way to the hospital. And then there's the chance you'd have to call his wife and give her the bad news.

What really scares me is the people who want to shut down the hobby because of one idiot.

Pretty much how that kid in New York killed himself with the helicopter. His life, but I hope no one else has to suffer because of his actions.

Years ago I crashed my corvette and nearly killed myself because I was driving stupid. I didn't buy another because I didn't want my wife and kids to hurt because of me.

Sometimes God gives you a second chance. Sometimes not. I hope this guy doesn't find out the hard way.

Well, if he was at a AMA field, he would be in the pilots box. The club dismissed a member
a few years back for that type of flying.

Saturday there was a plane about that size in a vertical hover and ran out of fuel. It did
a 180 and went if from about ten feet. It was a total loss. The crankshaft went out the
back of the motor. A big gas twin. The fuselage broke just behind the wing, two
pieces.

The pilot was in the pilots box, about thirty feet from the plane. They do not allow pilots
on the field when there are planes in the air. If there is a plane on the runway and
needs to be recovered you yell "on the runway" and wait for the pilots that are flying
to respond, "you are clear".

Not such a big deal. He touched the rudder on a big and ponderous 3D plane. So what? It's clear he was in control, and the prop was nowhere near. I don't have the skill, and I don't think I'd risk it even if I did, but on the scale of "dangerous RC stunts" it doesn't really figure.

I get far more worried when people fly composite hotliners at 300km/h. It may be a club, and they may be insured, but that doesn't make their servos any less likely to malfunction, nor does it grant bystanders special protection from being cleaved in two.

I agree there are flyers and situations that worry me more.

Pilots who walk out to stand in the flying area and hover a smaller model right in front of themselves with the prop spinning at their eye level for instance... though all flying from the flying area is deliberately taking a risk which would provide an insurer with a cast-iron invalidation argument.

The ego problem people who do this show concerns me as much - and I often find myself challenging Darwin to prove his theory right - which it still may be at the micro level at least, although it has been comprehensively shot to ribbons at the macro.

If flying when a 3D pilot starts his engine I would advise anyone concerned at the almost certain ego massaging risk-taking to call 'landing' and do so as soon as possible, then stand at a distance watching from self defence. The unfortunate side effect of this is that the action may be interpreted by the flyer as being for the purpose of admiring his skill and bravado - which could hardly be further from the truth.

Sooner or later something is going to break and you could witness a pilot's entry for the 'Darwin awards'.
