Build Log

Depron Avro Vulcan

There have been a few of these already on these pages, but here is my interpretation......................

It was built over 10 months, so this is a record of how I did it.

Inspiration came from Glenn7e. A quick email to him and a million A4 pages came back by return. Fortunately for me, Electriflier was just starting his version of the same plans so I had something to follow! This was my 1st build, so I needed all the help I could get.

80" span, all 3mm depron skins, 6mm ribs with carbon rod/tubes for the wings. No undercarriage to keep the weight & cost down and to keep it as simple as possible for my limited talent!!

Steady progress, but starting to take shape.

Probably not the best way to build wings......on a carpet floor with wooden skewers to keep the levels correct. Came out ok with no warps or twists so I must have done something right!

Starting to think about flying her now.

Tried to be clever and make my own beacons. It took me a long time to get there and they sort of work!!! I know nothing about electronics and it showed, but I enjoyed messing about and I learnt a bit.

A bit of paint brings it to life.
Grey was Halfords primer, White underside & green camo are testers from B&Q.

Thanks to everyone who helped me. It took me a long time, but when she is flying it was all worth while.
This must be the easiest model to fly. She has no vices whatsoever, slows to almost walking pace, climbs amazingly and looks awesome.
Almost forgot,
2 x 30amp esc
2 x BL2215/20 motors
2 x 11 x 7 props (pushers)
2 x 3000mah 3s lipos.

What a beautiful model - congratulations.

One of the all time beautiful full size aircraft - here's hoping they still fly it next year.

I am intrigued about one thing. I have been looking at an EMax BL2215/20 for a model but hadn't thought of anything like as big as 11x7.

When I put the numbers in eCalc it tells me that it will burn out the motor & the Esc. Are pushers really that much less efficient to let this combination work?

Thanks guys for the kind words.
Chris, you have spotted my deliberate mistake. The motors are BL2220/07. I had 11 x 5.5e props on originally. They were pulling 392 watts, 32.5 amps with the batteries in parallel. That's 16.25 amps each side. it was a bit under powered so I put on 11 x 7e props and it transformed it. I must admit, I have not yet put it on the watt meter with the new props, but I only fly it slowly to make it look scale in the air, with the odd power climb every so often. At the moment, all is well!! Batteries barely warm, motors warm, esc's are buried deep in the intakes with plenty of cooling (can't reach them to check!).
As for XH558, I also hope she will continue flying. I fully agree with you, the Vulcan is beautiful and my favourite aircraft. I've seen her display twice recently, absolutely fantastic.

Words fail me, but "magnificent", as offered above, is totally appropriate.

Best of all you put the effort into modeling the most beautiful aircraft ever built. Good choice!

About time this went up Ian as a build thread.

As I said many times on my thread, yours is a great build, and a fine flyer indeed. Another addition to the UK fleet of Vulcans. I don't know if you've seen my latest updates with more photos?

Well done mate

Daz
