Build Log

Dusty Crophopper

WELL....

I am excited about the movie since I saw the previews in May..

So last Sunday I decided to start building. Dont laugh too hard, scale building escapes me,so its a little crude.

I have spent hours looking at pictures, and watched the trailers multiple times,,,,,,there are 3 versions of Dusty,I decided on the original. The second with the blue on the fuse and tail is racing Dusty, and there is one with T-33 wings and a 4 blade prop...well...I havent seen the movie yet.

My goal is to fly it Friday, which is the day the movie opens...

It was about now I realized something..........(Wednesday)..after working 4 days on it....

The plane is a cartoon.....and not set up to fly in real life... The turbo thrush, air tractor, and Cessna 177? it was designed after had LONGER tails, and the nose was long to make up for the light turbine engine.

Pixar shortened the tail to make him...something.....not too long and skinny?(Like the airtractor 502)

The balance and porportions are WAY off..the battery will be BEHIND the Wing,or somewhere in that area

Oh well....going to keep building

First off, this is super cool. I hope to see it in the air! There's nothing to laugh at here, except the "that's-cool" laugh of seeing an RC Dusty.

You can use this calculator http://adamone.rchomepage.com/cg_calc.htm to put in your measurements and I think you'll be able to get her to fly, no matter what the proportions are compared to a full-scale ag plane.

Subbed! looking forward to this

The horz stab is 8" behind the wing.....I actually needed to move it foward to be like the character...but decided not to. Its short-coupled enough

The wing was made from Dollar tree foam, per the vids on this site. Mine were harder to make,I needed dihedral,so the straight spar wouldnt work. And my wings are tapered.

So I cut a spar from spruce and tapered it,glued both pieces together, and built the wings around them. Lot more time consuming than the simple flat wing.

Very nice! My son is also waiting for one of this! I promised him I will build one! To keep things simple, I'm thinking about a "shocked" version.

Maybe lots of lurkers! I showed it to my daughter last night and she said "WHOA!! IS THAT DUSTY!?!?"

She was super impressed. Soooo... If you have plans..... I know a certain little girl who'd like a flying tractor with eyeballs

getting there.....one thing about the way I build something....I reverse engineer and build main parts and mount them to constantly check for c/g...its time consuming, but keeps odd builds from getting tail/nose heavy. I HATE adding weight
