Multicopters, FPV, related hardware, firmware, etc.

This link will take to the my most active thread,

I wanted to resist the multicopter trend but I couldn't, I flew a DJI Phantom and the bug bit me!

I've made a small tri-copter that flies very well, now I'm building a 450 size Quad-Copter.

30th March 2015 EDIT

Things have moved quite a bit over the two years this blog started, now I'm doing FPV, see last pages.
I'm also going to post here plans of my frames, courtesy of my friend John "Potshot"

Glad you're willing to be the guinea pig here. If it goes well, I'll head this way too ;-)

I liked the thought of the tidiness, less cables and ESC's on the arms etc. price was good too.

I asked on the product page at HK before making my mind and someone said they could be flashed, and flashed they have been! haha..

we'll see how it goes, I must send BL heli an email so they include this model of esc on their list.

I've just found this comment on the HK product forum..

"I just re-flashed mine with blheli using the file for Skywalker 20A multi and boy what a difference. My quad went from barely stable to high performance. Flashing with blheli is the best thing you can do to this controller. "

I'm going to load that FW version instead then

Initial test (without props) was very good with the new firmware. Better throttle response, the differences I've noticed with BLheli on my Tricopter is increased stability and much better throttle response.

OK, so now I've soldered a male Molex lead to the ESC to feed the battery alarm feature on the KK2 flight controller, it worked great on the Tricopter once I got the values properly set up on the menu. (10.9v for 3s)

Any kind of low battery alarm is extremely important, not only because exhausting the battery in the air WILL cause a crash, but running the cells too low on volts will damage the battery.

A drop of hot glue was applied to all these additional connexions as well as some of the signal and BEC leads, heated and spread with a small nozzle with the hot air gun of my soldering station.

Looks great Jose!

Can't wait to see the maiden vid.

Oh, and at some point can you post a parts list / links please? Frame/motors/props/etc. I see the ESC already, just wondering about the rest. Or did I miss a post somewhere? ;-)

Cheers,

Frame..

I bought two to have spares

https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...B_Version.html

Motors...

https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=12921

Props...(among other sizes)

https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=25821
https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=25820

Nylon bits,

I used four 30mm M4 Nylon bolts, washers and screws to support the upper plate (plate taken from the extra frame I bought) for the FC and RX
This top plate needed just 2 holes drilled for the M4 bolts, see pics.

For fixing the FC...

https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=22733
https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=22734

I got some male/female molex leads for the voltage alarm feature of the KK2

a male molex coming from the ESC (battery terminals as per photo) to a female from the FC, I'll be soldering the latter to the FC soon and I'll post photos, a lot of people don't even know the KK2 has this feature, or they see it on the menu.. but don't know how to enable it.

No worries "mate"

I'm taking it slow and easy on this one, no rush, the Tri has been the guinea pig to learn on.

One of the motors of the tri-copter came off in mid flight here in the shop a few mis a go..bent shaft, broken prop and now noisy bearings on that motor...

more work to do..oh well, will put down to learning to holld the motors with a better system.

Might do a (wooden?), light quad with 4x Blue wonders and 10A Plush-esc's I have. 1300 nmAh 3s... yeah, that should work..

Mind you, I'm lazy.. and I'd like to find a light, good frame for a few 's

kind of a trainer that can take the abuse it is likely to get..

BTW, see what they've done? gave me the + plus status thing? I don't want it!

Oh well, free for a year, then ditch it..

Have you looked at flitetest's batbones?

http://flitetest.com/

Not sure the pricing, but it is out of cheap wood + a few carbon/plastic pieces.
