Changed name of thread officially form "Hobby King 1 2 3D How To with Michael Wargo" Since HK decided not to put this out on DVD ORIGINAL POST Looks like HobbyKing got the help of one of their ace pilots, Michael Wargo, to film a full fledged 3D how to video series- Calling it 1 2 3D. Cant wait to see the rest of this! If the name holds true (and this teaser hints at it), this sounds like it will probably start talking from scratch at airframe and radio setup and then expand on their already popular series of maneuver how to videos. I found that series of videos to be extremely helpful for me, in stick input concepts and even in selecting my next few models to learn 3D on. But what I missed during that learning curve (when I knew even less about 3D) and so I've come to find out the hard way, was the critical importance of setup that is often overlooked, widely misunderstood, and sometimes misrepresented by experts online (no one on RCG of course ). That setup determines everything once airborne and I hope that HobbyKing and Wargo, in addition to explaining the flying of the maneuvers also take the time to explain topics in depth like: servo and linkage setup, radio setup for control surface deflections, choosing the right motor& prop, mixing, rates, flight modes, and CG trimming. That's enough to keep a thread busy for a while. It would be excellent if we had a new definitive place to go for reliable information from a pro pilot like Michael Wargo. He has been actively responding to the youtube comments posted for this video since it launched, this would be a much better forum for them. So what does everyone else think? , what else should they cover?. I'm eager to see the rest of this chime in and maybe they'll pick up on this. Also, I wonder if they are interviewing for backup camera operators at HK too, lol! I'll ask the first question: Michael, in your videos you go through a wide range of maneuver from slow 3D, to precision 'pattern' style flying to violent tumbles, all with the same airplanes...how many rates and or flight modes do you have setup for these different flying styles and how much time do you spend flipping switches while your flying? |

I love the title. I have flown with him a couple of times. Listen to what he says, he's right! Lose your ego and you will improve. I try to pass on his teaching although I am a wimpy 3D pilot. Can't wait to see what I learn next from Michael.

1st, Thanks for starting the thread. The answer is I use 3,4 and 5 rates depending on the plane. My hard tumbling balsa 3d planes I use 4 or 5. Some have 2 high rates. 3d rates and slightly reduced throws from full because occaisionally the ailerons are superfast and keep the rolling harriers from slowing down. or elevator sometimes have 60 degrees and that makes them erratic, so I set that to 40 or 45. I also use a precision rate and a snap rate as well. a snap rate is just what it says. It uses low rates (suitable for a snap roll) and fast ailerons. I do switch a lot during the flights. Usually between snap and 3d or snap 3d and tumbling with high energy planes with super fast ailerons and 60 degree elevators. |

Hey everybody, just want to let you know that I'm the guy BEHIND the camera in alot of Micael's videos he does in Florida at Rocket City RC Club, Steve King. What Michael does with these airplanes is nothing short of amazing, he really wrings them out, looking for all the best and worse attributes of the airplanes, and finding them. I can tell you, from personal experience, that his training and teachings of 3-D flying has helped me recover an airplane from a situation that, previous to learning his tips and techniques, was in an unrecoveable attitude, but I was able to regain control using what I had learned. (Not such a bad stick myself, but not in the same league as Michael!)
Seeing him fly an airplane, that I had built from Hobby King, right out of the box, with NO other set up procedures other than the instructions, is always fun to watch, simply because you don't know what to expect, but that's where the thrill is, too! Watching Michael take something like that and putting it through all the paces, which is what you see in the videos I take of him flying the plane, really is awesome and keeps me more than excited about this hobby! I hope you ALL get the chance to watch and learn from these videos, you'll appreciate the tips! Keep Flying and Learning! |

Thanks. I'm not familiar with that program. I have used another (irfan?) It was a hassle. I'll check out keepvid. I still would prefer to just order a DVD. (hint, hint, Hobby King.)

Cool idea, I was shocked first time I saw the HK how to 3D on youtube. I thought ti was going to be a 30 sec teaser for a purchasable DVD. short but helpful. If HK does this one right and gives some focus to setup as I said above, it would be more of a permanent reference than a how to...and would lend itself to sale a lot better than a 3 minute how to with a few pointers.
