You can check the magnet orientation by take a separate magnet and run it along the magnets in the bell. It should alternate in attracking and repelleing.

This is a real shot in the dark, but make sure your cut-off voltage on your ESC is not set too high for the batteries your using.

kenny_dilger, I have a popsicle stick with a magnet glued on the end, once the magnts are in the bell I go all the way around the bell. You should have attract-repel-etc all the way around.

Bill,

Great idea, I was actually testing it with a 6 cell battery, and the ESC I used to test (hacker 30p) has been setup for a 10 cell pack. More than likely a long time ago I reset the LVC for use with a 10 cell pack.

But I am hesitant to think that is it, because I also tried a brand new CC25 that has not been touched yet... But still, great thinking. Lastly, I have not proven that a castle creations even works with any motor yet. I originally bought it and it did not work at all with any motor. Castle Creations sent me this new one and I have not had a chance to test it out fully... (Need more connectors)

I'm looking at replaceing the stock IPS motors in my GWS A-10 with EDF-50s. These CD-Rom motors look like a good option but I haven't seen an optimum wind for this conversion. I plan on using a CC-25 and I currently have a 2S1P and a 3S1P Kokam 1500 battery pack. A local computer store has a bin full of CD-Roms at $5 a piece.

So far all I have been able to gleen is that I should have a delta wind for the ducted fans. I have seen all kinds of wire diameters and wind counts but few pratical results. I have read through about 7 different threads on this subject but they all keep linking back to the other threads.

So who out there has had success with ED-50s and CD-Rom motors? Are you running single or dual speed controllers for twin ducteds?

TIA
Bob

Hi Art:

yes I did, several times, and after reading some 21 pages there were only about 5 or 6 posts listing windings and wire sizes. I was hoping on a little more information but I guess I'll have to do with what was there.

Thanks

And six magnetpoles instead of twelve.

I take it you did not miss these cd-rom EDF threads:

Bob,

What you want is a 20x5mm stator. The length of the teeth, the exact diameter and thickness of the stator will change the number turns you need. 24 or 25 ga, wire with 8-12 turns. Wire them in star, not delta. 10 turns with 24 wired in star with a 3s Kokam 340 is 7.5 amps static and around 6.5 in the air. Drop down to 8 turns and the static is up to 9 amps. This is with the 5 blade fan. A thinner stator will require more turns to keep the amps the same. You want the 5x5x1 N 45 magnets, 12 of them arranged in 6 pairs.

I'm very interested in a DF build myself, start a thread and document your progress so we all can learn!

12 5x5x1 N45s are going to be a bit crowded. A 20mm stator has a diameter of 62mm and those magnets are going to be pretty close together. Does anyone know what brand of CD roms have 20 mm stators? There is a local reseller of government surplus who has bins of CD rom drives, different manufacturers and the fastest are around 32x. The price is right at $5 USD. Which would have bearing shafts?

Thanks Ron The first two threads were new to me.

This still appears to be a ground breaking project, in two posts I have go with 6 magnet poles and then 12 magnet poles

They have 7x3mm ball bearings and a very good stock magnet ring, plenty good enough for a micro-heli, maybe not for 45000 rpm?
