Is it possible to use a dx5e and buddy box it with another dx5e? i assume that theoretically its possible, but does anyone have real experience with this?

Yes. It can. The master has to be turned "on" and the slave "off". The slave will power up when you plug in the trainer cord. All the servo switches have to match and you will need to be sure that when you switch from master to slave that your trims match.
