After having flown the entire EF 48 in EXP series except the new Yak and the Extra 300, and all the sub 50 in. 3dhs planes(that are still being sold) except for the 42 slick, 47 osiris, and 48 super vyper, my personal favorite is now the 3dhs 47 shp. I think it's the best combination of huckability(for lack of a better term) and smoothness and precision. It's weird flying it, it's got an oddnessabout itself(but not in a bad way, it just feels different), but it clicked with me. The Laser exp is pretty awesome as well, very smooth, yet ready to wrap around itself in an instant. I guess it's all just about finding the airplane that just feels "right" to you.

The little slick is a great lunch time flyer though and I fly it almost every day when I'm not repairing it. |

I'm not affiliated just a guy who loves planes The big question is what is your flying style? Is it mixed with precision, all low and slow, or high speed/high energy stuff? I have a pretty mixed style but lean a little toward precision and high energy flying so the Extra EXP really suits me. My second favorite would be the Edge EXP. That plane 3Ds itself |

I have flown all EF 48" planes apart from the Yak and owned all but one (the Laser). In my opinion the MXS is the most 'stimulating' to fly because it does the high energy moves so well. The Extra is a very close 2nd with the Edge extremely close behind that. They are all very close in character but subtly different and I would say a lot depends on your own flying style and personal preferences. If you can get a play on any beforehand that will tell you more than any personal opinions here - in my opinion
Wish I could speak for 3DHS models but they have not been that easy to source in the UK historically. |

I know you've asked about balsa's, but I'm going to throw another one in the mix. They fly almost as well as balsa's, and in 3D are just a little better. That's the Skywing/Wattaplane 48" EPP hybrid Edge and Slick. They just don't quite do the high energy stuff as well as balsa but are very close. They are a little more resistant to damage and are very easy to repair. Since getting mine I haven't flown my balsa's, and have sold all but one. So far I still have my EF MXS, but I haven't flown it since getting the Skywing's. I just can't part with the MXS. Just another thought.

hone1er, you make a good point of what style do I fly, that was why I asked "why" would choose the reason they keep the one thy chose ie it's the best high energy plane I've had or it harriers like crazy. My flying style is more slow floaty 3D, I took out my 3DHS SHP for the 1st time in ages yesterday and it's best plane I have to harrier by a mile (my personal favourite move) with virtually no wing rock at all !!!!! It's incredibly precise to fly, the only thing I find slightly restricting is even just doing 1/4 point rolls it's roll rate is relatively slow compared to some others. In an ideal world I'd like a plane that harriers as well and is precise as this but is slightly livelier in other aspects / roll rate etc. It may be a trade off and the stability of this plane is what it makes it harrier so well so to "liven it up" it may lose some of that. Do like the idea of both the EF Extra and the 3DHS 42" Slick, the 42" wingspan is particularly appealing for a just grab and go. if anyone has any other comments about either of those in light of what I've just written especially how both of these harrier / wing rock and also waht batteries are best for both would be really helpful! |

I can't compare with the 3DHS SHP (unfortunately!) but the EF 48" Extra has no wing rock problems in harrier. The lack of rock in harrier is imo one of the major distinguishing features between later designs like the EXP series and earlier ones like the smaller Extra, Edge and Yak. I have found all the 48", 60" and 78" (largest I have) extremely stable in harrier. Earlier designs could be persuaded to rock less by mixing in spoileron with elevator but the modern designs do not need that help.

Great planes, that's your next one sorted then
Flew the smaller EF Extra 300 this morning after gluing the rear end I'd removed doing inverted harriers too low back on. It was my 1st balsa and I didn't do a great job of putting it together, the stabs were all out but now it's in line and flies better post crash than before and it's still a good plane. |

I set up every other plane I have about the same with the exception of double the rudder expo on the 64" MXS. I have about 42 flights (2 last night) on my 48" Extra EXP and I still need to tweak the rates again. It does track wonderfully and I dialed the low rate ailerons back allot and the slow rolls are sweet but this has been the most frustrating airframe to get comfortable with I have had in the last 2 years. My walls look like loop entries I'm still waging the tail on what are still sloppy rollers. IO know it's me and not the plane so I'm mostly going to fly it for the next few weeks. (except I have to mix in at least a few flight on the MXS just because) I will get it worked out. Probably have it already if it hadn't taken 25 flights to fix all the things I set up poorly when I put it together.
