Charging 7 cell nicads with TX 9.6V charger

I am trying to keep the cost down when buying my first set of kit

Is there any way I could use a charger designed to charge a TX 9.6V pack (60 ma or 120 ma charging current) to charge a 270mah or 400mah 6 or 7 cell nicad flightpack?

Presumably I could do a timed charge but what happens if forget and leave it charging?

Yes, you can do it but don't if you think you will forget.
Generally a charge rate of C/10 is safe to leave on, but you've got more than that.
Charge time is C/charge rate plus 40% for loss.
Always feel the batts once in a while to make sure they are not getting too hot!

And remember that you will get more than the normal current out of the charger because it's only has a lower voltage it needs to drive. Typically you'll get 15% more into 7 cells (68/135mA) and up to 25% more into 6 cells (75/150 ma) so reduce the charge time accordingly.
