Shrike - Forward Swept Flying Wing - Plans & Video

Building off of the success of the StingRay, and still wanting something different. I began with the basic plan of the F&F. This is how I got started on the StingRay. Wanted to experiment with a forward swept wing and this is where it has gone.

The Shrike is a new design and experiment in combat models for the SEMFF group. The prototype was completed and tested this week (04-JUN-2013). The sucessful testing including multiple midairs and flying out of each one, proves this is one tough bird.

Most flights were conducted with an 850 or 950 mAh 2s battery, and a couple of flights with a 750 mAh 3s battery.

Airframe Specifications;

Wingspan - 32"
Over all length - 15"
RTF Weight - 8.2 oz

Equipment Specifications;

Motor - 1700 Kv 2730 KEDA (24g)
Propeller - HK 7x6 APC like
ESC - 15A HK SS
Servos - two 10g HK analog
Rx - HK R610

Notable characteristics -
The FSW design fabulous pitch response and requires very little stick pressure to hold inverted flight. Loops are tight and straight. Rolls are crisp, fast, and predictable.

The only habit it had that took some getting used to was kind of flopping around when gotten into a full stall, especially inverted. Recovery was simple, with releasing the aileron/elevator stick and applying throttle she flies right back on the wing.

All in all I am very happy with its performance, and will combat it quite a bit this summer.

I have just finished the production prototype, which moved the aileron servos aft 2" and covered the esc/rx pocket that now includes some areas for stuffing wires. Will have this one out for testing on 11-JUN-2013. The only reason for the second prototype was to work out better component arraignment for CG considerations and to tidy up the design for production.

This is a very easy build with all horizontal laminations with exception of the vertical fin.

Here are a couple of flight videos

Little bit more video of later in the flight and closer in flying.

Forward-swept wings are always a bit disconcerting to me. They obviously work quite well in this case, however!

Is the key here the single central vertical stab? Seems like wingtip fins on a forward-swept config would cause all sorts of problems.

Wingtip fins on a FSW ship would be disasterous. A swept rearward single central fin would be even better than the foward swept one I have. However I have a theme going and it is quite stable even at low speeds.

This plane with the CG set a bit aft glides great. Set the CG forward and you have a very nuetral pitch change under power. Of course I have 5 degrees of downthrust as well.

I have sticker designed for mine already, the streamer need a little work, I may leave it off and free hand something on the plane.

Nice Shrike, would be interesting to see how your shrike would hold up against my F/A-241 Shrike

I think you got me on speed, but I may get you on manuverability. I think yours is by far simpler to build. Looks great and stable.

Hi OZO,

I knew you had used the Shrike name, however, I could not think of something better. I like names of creatures and the Shrike is a predatory song bird, and I like the K sound in the name to go with the wing planform.

no worries, though I would love to see a video of my shrike vs yours

also there have been about 4 other "real" aircraft with the Shrike name so its not like either of us is being original

So here is no. 2, the production prototype, and the one the plans will be based off of. This should be a very easy plane to scratch build as all the lines are straight.
