This is my official lipo recharging station.

It also saves me the trouble of starting the charcoal.

Wilma! Get the steaks ready, I'm starting the lipo charge!

Shame on you, DNA. The pack should be UNDER the grille.

Ok, is it grille, or grill? Ok, I got it, if it's used for cooking food it's a grill, but if it's an open grating forming a screen, then it's a grille. Since the use here is as a screen rather than a cooking surface, it's a grille.

Here is why Ken is wary of lipos.

...Answering the question about why there aren't more cell phone fires:

Mast modern cell phones have only one cell. Therefore, they have no cell balance issues.

That makes sense. We need more powerfull single cells.

Man I will just stick to nicads and Nickel Metal-Hydride. These new batteries are just too scary!

It hasn't happened to me, or anybody else I know of who individually charges their cells.

I'm with you - Bigger cells will fly bigger planes without multiplicity. I'm still partial to my original Kokam 3270s.

BTW, re the discussion of safety circuitry of the kind found in various LiPo-powered consumer devices: Duralite is making packs with Thunder Power cells and a safety charging circuit which is detached for flying.

If there are any newcomers to lipos who may be reading this thread and
haven't seen the live pictures and video of a single lipo cell exploding
and bursting into flames, take a look at the link below. It may help to
remind you to be more cautious when using lipo cells. Click the green
arrow to advance through the pictures. Click the yellow arrow to go back
to the page where you'll find the WMV video link below the thumbnails.

Remember this is a SINGLE small lipo cell, not a pack of cells.

Dave, very sorry for your friends loss's, totally sucks!

I have not heard of any fires from cell unbalance, in every case there has been a issue of some degree of improper handling..

It takes heat to start a fire.. when I charge my packs I NEVER leave them unattended, I continuously monitor them just simply by touch for any heat or swelling, there should be minimal heat occur from charging lipos...

I have caught one pack balloon during charge , it had been crashed but it didnt show sign of failure till recharge...

lipos are awesome power to weight benifits for our hobby but you can not leave them unattended while charging and must isolate them if they have taken a hard knock....
use good common sense, heed all the warnings & please be safe!

All representatives of Li-poly cell and charger manufacturers, distributors and retailers who have discussed Li-poly safety on this forum over the past couple of years have agreed that cell imbalance is a major safety issue, and a leading cause of cell failures during charging. That's precisely why Duralite has Li-poly packs with a safety circuit that stops charging the pack if a cell imbalance is detected, and others install center taps on their packs so that individual cell voltage can be checked.
