Night Flying
Apprentice converted and been flying night ops for past 6 months. Ideal night flyer.....
LED tape lights buried in underside of wings (and covered over with white translucent tape) LED tape lights in centre of fuselage G4, 200 lumen LED's for landing lights and Nav lights Remote control flasher unit for Nav lights EDIT: Note that the household lights were on dim when the photos were taken to enable my camera to focus. In a couple of shots, the house lights were on full. Plane looks a lot brighter outside at night! |

Nice post and lights. I hope you saw my above posts and vid. She'll handle four 10 Watt L.E.D.s and can be seen for miles. The 200 lumens aren't bad but mine are 1000 lumens apiece for a total of 4000 lumens of cool white facing the front.
Some might consider it overkill but I'm sure I'll be able to land her FPV when I get back Home and put the new .00008 lux camera on her from SurveilZone. |

Yes I saw your post a while back. Those are some seriously bright lights! I bet you really can see that bad boy from miles away. As for me, I don't do FPV, so I have no need to see the plane from such a distance. For close range, I find the LED tape lights on their own are good enough to see the plane in the sky, but the additional 200 lumen nav lights just give it that bit extra (and help light up the ground ahead when landing). I actually found the white landing lights a bit dazzling at night (for my eyes), and therefore reduced the intensity by colouring over the lamp lens with a blue permanent marker (as you might be able to tell in the photographs). The blue makes them a lot less harsh on my rubbish old eyes. For FPV that won't be an issue - you won't be looking directly at the lights, you will just be looking at what they are lighting up - in which case the brighter the better. Your 4000 lumen 'floodlight' should be ideal for this. For non FPV it might be difficult to look at the plane with 4000 lumens shining back at you. Also note that the Nav lights are a genuine 200 lumens. LED bulbs are a bit like the 'wild west' at the moment - resellers claim very high lumen counts for their bulbs, but in reality the bulbs are nowhere near as bright as their claims (especially if they are 'ebay specials') - I actually sent a number of bulbs back for refund as they were not as advertised. Anybody looking to buy LED's online beware! |

I was going to go the same route you did with the red and green L.E.D. stripe across the wings for orientation and proper nav light colors at night. I decided against it because I thought it might compromise the aerodynamics of the wings. One could always notch out the wings and put the strips in, then clear tape over them. I decided to do the multicolored strip across the bottom.
It's good to know that your Apprentice flys ok with the strips. Ya I have seen spots many times after landing my plane at night with it facing me. Hopefully I won't have to worry about that once I get my FPV gear on it, right now I'm only flying FPV with my "Day Apprentice". |

Hi Friends, Anyone ever mount their GoPro in the windshield area of the Apprentice, cutting out foam to make it fit? I've been running the Mobius and I need something with a better dynamic range, especially for bright overcast conditions. Searched the thread but did not find anything on this.
Thank you! |

Thanks. I was thinking about the aerodynamic factor and the windshield area seems like a good place to embed a camera. Currently I fly FPV with the Mobius, with the snap-in mount hot-glued to the top of the wing. Would like higher quality video, better dynamic range, etc. that provided by the Mobius. But a CCD flight cam might solve some of my upgrade issues.
