Build Log

200% Earl Stahl Hurricane

I started this on another thread. It looks as tho it may be quite long. So, instead of the risk of losing it in a long thread( thanks Brian) I'll do it in it's own.

I know Martin is going to read this, so... You have got me thinking about flaps and retracts, after reading seeing your threads on the hurri.

Enlarged Earls plans to 41.5" WS/31" LOA. I started with the laminations for the tail & wing tip bows. Used 1/32" balsa for the lams.

Bulkheads and stringers The nose stringers are not drawn into the nose. This would cause warpage of the keels. The rear stringers are 1/16" bass, and draw very little pressure in bending.

Steve,

That rudder looks fantastic. Your Hurricane is going to make my P-40 look plain-jane. Oh-well. When you raise the bar, you inspire all the rest of us to get better. Keep it up.

By the way, what do the fuselage and fin/rudder weigh so far?

Thanx guy's(big head)

I don't have a scale to weigh things this light. All wood is contest 6-7# except in certain areas. The scale I do have is saying 1oz.
Does GWS make a retract to fit this size plane? If not I'll get a set of Robart 1/2. Then I can make my decision. There really is no place for me to fly a small plane with gear. I fly at a turf farm that has a road, but pretty rough one. It would do the gear in fast.

The flaps are real inviting. If I do them, I'll most likely make them from 1/64"ply & glass laminate. With the scale ribs it would be light and stiff.

I decided to add the trim tabs also, after figuring something was missing...
