Evolution Engines 15cc Gas?


I have a funny feeling we will be seeing a Evo 91GX before too long.

Evolution has just introduced the 91NX glow engine. Interestingly, it has the same exact pad on the crankcase for mounting the ignition pickup, as the 10GX engine.

I think they should bore it out a little more and make it a 1.00 gas engine (17cc).

I'll bet with a different (thinner) sleeve they could (larger piston).

That might be a first to use an ABC cylinder/piston in a engine larger than 10cc. I think 10cc is probably the limit for ABC cylinders and pistons. But SC apparently did make a 1.08 cubic inch displacement engine for a short while with ABC cylinder/piston construction. But there are too many problems and issues with metal distortion from uneven heat distribution when the engine is running. I don't remember seeing or hearing about any engines larger than 10cc with lapped cylinder/pistons or ABC cylinder/pistons. But there might have been some though. There were a few lapped piston engines at 10cc displacement using a iron piston and steel sleeve but they tended to vibrate way too much though.

Oops I almost forgot that there were some ducted fan engines made with ABC cylinders and pistons in them. These engines did go .80 or just over 1.00 cubic inch displacement. So yeah they could make one ABC as a 15cc engine then.

MVVS also still offer their 12.7 and 15 cc (.77 and .91) engines, with a very successful and long-lasting ABC setup.
They were never of any other construction.

Their even larger 26 cc engine was ringed, however.

Glow engines are still hugely popular. There is nothing wrong with glow engines. Their simplicity of use with not needing complicated carburetors, spark plugs, ignition systems, etc. still make them very popular. The .40 through .50 size glow engine market is still really good as that size plane fits easily in most automobiles for tranasport to and from the flyingt fields. But larger planes are still pretty popular still.

But electrics are steadily moving in on the larger and larger size engines over time. At first it was 1/2a size planes being electrified but as the motors, ESC's and batteries evolved, the electrics are being used in ever larger size planes. The major problem is still flight time as the battery packs are still limited in that respect, thus the glow engines still win out in that area. The battery pack cost can still be a huge hurdle too.

Gasoline engines still have issues with gasoline odors and smell, plus more complicated carburetors though.

Yeah, glow engines are awesome. It's just that the new breed of 'small' gas engines are rather interesting and just another option to choose from. I will always fly glow, and now occasionally gasoline fueled engines.

The biggest problem with gasoline is the odor and how flammable it is.
My wife hates the odor of my gasoline engines while she doesn't mind the nitro.
