Dave, it will take a lot of cells to be overcharged and not ignite to statistically give some credence to a non-fire claim. A statistician would have to make the calculations as to sample size.
In any case, it should be an interesting development with the old guard downplaying the technology and the new guys praising it.

By the way. are these cells actually being manufactured commercially or are they still in the R&D stage? If the product performance meets the hype, they will sweep the market.

Oh yeah, Hoppy, we'll be discovering unique failure modes for these cells long after they're introduced no matter how much they're tested to failure before being released. No sane engineer could possibly dream up the things we have in store for these cells. But it would still be useful to see one fail on video before the first one is sold.

By the way, I'm choosing to be optimistic here and talk about these cells as if they are a done deal. They aren't, of course, until we can buy them and fly them ourselves.

EDIT: Oh my, I had no idea how far ahead of his time asperkins was. He discovered these cells back in August 2002!

Hi Simon,

Don't forget to visit Jamara!
The X-Peak 3 loader is a top seller. (see www.lipoly.de section "Ladegeräte" and the specs... it is again sold out)
I guess they can update this X-Peak 3. First it was only Li-ION. Now it is Li-ION and Li-Poly and hopefull very soon...also Li-Phosphate with an eprom exchange.

Cheers,
Rob

Great stuff, Simon! It would be nice if you could edit your video of the Saphion cell failing to just the portion where it actually fails -- perhaps the last minute of the 4-minute video? That would cut it down to ~15 megs. Even better would be to use a codec on the video that gives maximum compression with minimum loss of quality. DivX and the newly released Microsoft WM9 codecs are both good for that. But the still images get the point across.

As we get closer to actually being able to purchase these new cells, and people begin making their decisions about whether or not to buy them, the more technical data that you have available the better. Hopefully you will have a website available with all the little technical details (such as discharge rate charts) that everyone is always asking about when deciding which cell to buy.

The sad thing is thats not to far off from what some people will do to them and then be upset when they fail.
