Sneak Preview for Novembers, December, January, Meeting

On November 13th we may be lining up another University of Santa Clara profession to speak about unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

Then in December we are kicking off to have our Christmas party.

Lastly, on January 8th we will be having an auction which is when were members are forced by their significant others to let their treasures go for a song. 10% of all proceeds go to the club. Many a member has picked up a new large vintage glider to bring to life after being unloved for too many flying seasons. I personally picked up a bag of cabosil (micro ballons for big boys) to last a lifetime.

Mark your calendars,

Kyle

The Research of Dr. Christopher Kitts, University of Santa Clara/NASA Ames

We have been learning about John Montgomery, but it now it is time to catch up with a modern day aeronautical academic from Santa Clara University. Dr. Christopher Kitts serves as the Director of the Robotic Systems Laboratory at SCU as well as the Director of the Center for Robotic Exploration and Space Technologies at NASA Ames.

Chris will be talking about his research projects that include marine robotic systems, clusters of autonomous land rovers, and our favorite autonomous aircraft & microspacecraft. Much of his work is around using clusters of autonomous surface vehicles (ASV) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to perform self direction or enhance single-pilot control. Donít miss our last talk of the year as we continue learn new things about the science and future science behind our hobby from the experts from the University of Santa Clara.

PS: We just managed to get on Chris's busy schedule by "flying stand-bye", little did I know his team is literally prepping for a satellite launch next week they are just ahead of schedule enough to talk to the South Bay Soaring Society.

See You There,

Kyle

Next SBSS Program 1/8/14 - Auction Off Your RC Goodies

On Christmas morning you will probably find way too much cool hobby stuff under your tree that you just don't have room for. Well, bring it to our next meeting (not counting the Holiday Party) on Wednesday night 6:30 business/7:30 auction, January 8th, 2014 at the Saratoga Fire Station and help keep the gift getting spirit alive a few weeks longer.

RC Ornithopter with Passively Deforming Aeroelastic Wings

Our club president met Steve when he was flying his ornithopter in his neighborhood and he knew right then we had to get him to speak at one of our programs. He now is coming to our next SBSS Program, Wednesday 7:30pm (business meeting at 6:30pm) on 2/12/14 at the Saratoga Fire Station, Steve Morris will talk about his efforts to design and test an ornithopter that flies efficiently by flapping its wings and is capable of gliding similar to a large bird.

The model uses "Passively Deforming Aeroelastic Wings" which is a fancy way of saying that the wings naturally deform due to air and acceleration loads to (hopefully) allow efficient flapping and gliding flight. This bad boy has a 7.4 ft wingspan and weighs 5.2 lbs, similar to the size and weight of a large soaring bird. The basic theory and technical challenges will be discussed and videos from flight tests will be shown.

Steve's thread on RC Groups about the model at:

Flying in Poland & Building on Granite

Well you may think these two subjects don't go together, but Walt and Bob S. are providing our next SBSS Program on Wednesday night, 3/14/14 at 7:30pm at the Saratoga Fire Station, 14380 Saratoga Ave, Saratoga, CA.

Walt's portion of the program will be on full size soaring in Poland. The principal subject is a soaring center in Southeastern Poland that is very unusual. It centers around a soaring academy where all aspects of the sport are featured.

Here is a picture of what it could look like:

Bob's portion of the program will cover how you can build the ultimate granite building board for less than $100. Experts say that if you build on an uneven board, then you will fly as badly as I do, so I take building boards very seriously. I'll even bring in my own building board that I built to show you how to build a $0 building board as well

Here is a picture of Bob's actual building board and proof that he really does drink and use dangerous tools at the same time.

See you Wednesday,

Kyle23

Now Posted on Our New YouTube Channel - Aviation in the Victorian Era John Montgomery

Aviation in the Victorian Era and The Lost Legacy of John Montgomery (59 min 10 sec)

John Giddings and Veronica Craven spoke on Wednesday, September 11th, 2013 at our South Bay Soaring Society meeting.

In the Victorian Era, when Man fist set foot up into the air, many approaches for flight were explored including kites, dirigibles, orninthopters and gliders. This was the state of technology that our own local aviator, John Montgomery built from. In 1884, he flew the first glider in the Western Hemisphere. In 1905 his gliders were the first to navigate the high air, thousands of feet up.

John and Veronica are producing a movie that will tell the story of Montgomery's race for the first practical commercial aeroplane. This film project also creates a wonderful opportunity for education, highlighting his inspiration as a young boy and his determined experiments built with his own hands from things you'd find in a farmyard. Experiments that youth could replicate today.

Here is a historic first video of one of our best SBSS programs. Hope you enjoy.

How The League of Silent Flight Works

The League of Silent Flight is a organization that awards levels of achievement for a gradually increasing set of model soaring accomplishments. It is another way to perfect your skills, especially if you want to do expand them beyond just trying to win contests.

On Wednesday night 4/9/14 at 7:30pm (business meeting at 6:30), at the Saratoga Fire Station at 14380 Saratoga Ave, Saratoga, Ca our own Bob S. and Greg (Level V of LSF) will be presenting how you too can climb this illustrious ladder of achievement. They will discuss the history of LSF which was started by members of the South Bay Soaring Society, the levels achievement and strategies for accomplishing each level. They will also talk about how LSF has helped their soaring and in any other ways as well. They may even be able to touch on the new LSF Electric Soaring Achievement Program for you electric sailplane fans in our club. This new achievement program is soon to be announced at the LSF web site at www.silentflight.org. Hope to see you Wednesday night and as always we are open to anyone who is interested sailplanes and silent flight.

If you missed Wednesday night, be sure to see it on our new SBSS YouTube Channel http://www.youtube.com/user/SBSSSouthBaySoaring

The Life of John J. Montgomery...Part 2 NOW ONE SBSS YOUTUBE CHANNEL

Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCT-JF4E7IP1IVCM3Fx8fFLQ or click on:

Quest for Flight: John J. Montgomery and the Dawn of Aviation in the West - Gary Fogel (1 hr 10 min 51 sec)

You heard about the movie, now you've got to read the book. Dr. Gary Fogel will provide us with a lecture on the life of John J. Montgomery, focusing on his efforts not only in aviation but science in general. As a physicist, Montgomery was one of the first to recognize that the laws of fluid dynamics can be applied to the river of air above us. His experiments in aviation routinely began with free flight model gliders, making him one of America's first model aviators! His understanding of airflow over surfaces and the importance of curved surfaces for lift allowed him to design efficient manned gliders, released at high altitudes above the Bay Area in 1905 - the first public flights of a heavier-than-air flying machine in America, predating Glenn Curtiss's flights with the June Bug on the east coast. Montgomery gave his life in 1911 experimenting with a radically new glider design near San Jose, a pitcheron with fixed tail surfaces.

Gary is the co-author of Quest for Flight: John J. Montgomery and the Dawn of Aviation in the West, a biography of Montgomery a decade in the making. http://www.amazon.com/Quest-Flight-J.../dp/0806142642
or pick up a copy at the Santa Clara University Bookstore and bring it in to get signed by the author. He may have a few extra books as well.

He has written extensively on the history of gliding flight and was instrumental in preserving the Torrey Pines Gliderport in San Diego with historical designations at the City, State, and Federal levels. An avid RC soaring enthusiast, Gary also helped establish AMA's National Aeromodeling Heritage Program, preserving America's aeromodeling sites for future generations. Gary has also set several national and world records for models, and has written for magazines such as Quiet Flyer, RC Sport Flyer, and Soaring. He is a Leader Member and Contest Director of the AMA, and Historian for the Torrey Pines Gulls.
