NOW ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL
Paul Naton - Setup and Tuning Model Sailplanes (44 min 30 sec)

All are invited to South Bay Soaring Society's next program at 7:45pm Pacific Standard Time Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at the main Saratoga Fire Station.

Paul Naton of Radio Carbon Art is probably the most viewed resource on all things associated with Thermal Duration, Slope Soaring and Discus Launch (DLG) gliders. Most all of us in the hobby have seen at least one of his videos and owe Paul a debt of gratitude for bringing professional level video training on most any aspects of sailplane flying. Taking advantage of his latest work in sailplane tuning (see Precision Tuning Techniques) our next Wednesday Program will cover the following subjects via FaceTime video:
  • New concepts in flight tuning
  • Importance of mechanical setup
  • Optimizing snap-flap, camber and elevator mixes
  • Finetuning aileron differential
  • Mixing ailerons and rudder
  • Testing CG (center of gravity) without a dive test
  • How to fly with CG set further aft
  • How to flight test your plane
  • Troubleshooting setup and tuning problems

If time allows Paul will touch on some of his latest work in advanced air reading to help your thermaling. Please join us and learn how to get more performance out of your glider while reducing your effort to fly.

The South Bay Soaring Society Program is held every 2nd Wednesday of the month at the main Saratoga Fire Station at 14380 Saratoga Ave, Saratoga, CA 95070 (except December and January). The business meeting starts at 6:30pm and the program begins sometime after 7:45pm. Anyone is welcome to attend either meeting and you can bring friends.

Sorry this meeting will not be broadcast as a Web meeting, however it will be recorded and posted to our the South Bay Soaring Society YouTube channel.

SBSS Silent Auction For Great Sailplanes and Parts

All are invited to South Bay Soaring Society's next program at 7:45pm Pacific Standard Time Wednesday, January 8th, 2020 at the main Saratoga Fire Station.

It’s that time of year when you can clear out your closets of the detritus of your hobby. Remember one man’s junk and another man’s gold. Bring in your models and model parts that might be useful to other members of South Bay Soaring Society. In that past we have auctioned off:
  • Model sailplanes
  • Sailplane kits
  • Building materials such as balsa-wood, carbon fiber cloth, and tools
  • Components such as servos, batteries and motors
  • Radio transmitters and receivers
  • Other hobby gear such as nylon line, hi-starts, and carrying bags

The rules are simple. Sheets will be supplied where the seller can list the starting bid and then attendees can write in their bid. 20% of the winning bid price will be paid back to our club by the seller. Don’t forget to bring small bills since many items go for a song.

The South Bay Soaring Society Program is held every 2nd Wednesday of the month at the main Saratoga Fire Station at 14380 Saratoga Ave, Saratoga, CA 95070. The business meeting starts at 6:30pm and the program begins sometime after 7:45pm. Anyone is welcome to attend either meeting and you can bring friends.

Comments on New FAA Rules for RC Sailplane Modelers with Lawrence Tougas

All are invited to South Bay Soaring Society's next program at 7:45pm Pacific Standard Time Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at the main Saratoga Fire Station.

Lawrence Tougas, Vice President of the Academy of Model Aeronautics representing District X (AZ, CA, HA, NV and UT) will be discussing with Bob Smith on how the new FAA rules may affect RC Sailplanes. These rules (see https://www.regulations.gov/docket?D=FAA-2019-1100) would affect all sailplanes less than 8.8 oz and would require them to have a transponder and fly only at FAA approved sites below a 400 foot ceiling. These rules are open for multiple comments until March 2, 2020 at https://www.regulations.gov/docket?D=FAA-2019-1100. Lawrence and Bob will discuss ideas on how to best make these comments and other concerns about these new rules. You can see the 16 comments of our sister club - Torrey Pines Gulls member Gary Fogel https://www.regulations.gov/docketBr...=FAA-2019-1100

Bob Smith will also lead a local discussion after the discussion to form an action plan appropriate for SBSS members.

I believe the maximum weight for UNaffected UAS is .55lbs or 8.8oz or 249.4758g. Beyond that, we are all in the crosshairs of the FAA.

Xplorer Thermal Duration Sailplanes

Xplorer Thermal Duration Sailplanes (48 min 47 sec)

All are invited to South Bay Soaring Society's next program at 7:45pm Pacific Daylight Time Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at the main Saratoga Fire Station.

Xplorer sailplanes from NAN Models have now swept our open class club competitions and it is time to have a panel discussion about the success of this model. Starting with the Xplorer 1 to the latest Xplorer 3 our club just keeps buying these planes. The only challenge that may come to its popularity is the emerging F5J motor-launch class glider which are built radically lighter since they aren’t exposed to the stress of a winch launch.

Our panel of experts will be Tim, Don and Rich who have been flying these planes for years. In this panel they will discuss:
  • History of Xplorer’s march to total world domination
  • Overview of the types of Xplorers, and which would be best for you
  • Downside of Xplorers
  • Who is NAN Models (the manufacturer) and Soaring USA (the distributor)
  • How to set up an Xplorer
  • Tips and Tricks
  • How to buy a used Xplorer
  • The future for Xplorers and F5J considerations

The South Bay Soaring Society Program is held every 2nd Wednesday of the month at the main Saratoga Fire Station at 14380 Saratoga Ave, Saratoga, CA 95070 (except December and January). The business meeting starts at 6:30pm and the program begins sometime after 7:45pm. Anyone is welcome to attend either meeting and you can bring friends.

Now on SBSS YouTube Channel Noel Presents The Yellow Jacket RES Sailplane

Yellow Jacket Rudder Elevator Spoiler Model Sailplane (19 min 57 sec)

Presented July 14, 2021

The 2m Yellow Jacket RES comes from Sonoran Laser Arts (Corky Miller) in Fountain Valley, AZ as a complete kit (excepting covering film, glue, etc). Laser cutting is clean, precise, and parts are well thought out self-fixturing. Greg introduced me to this plane knowing my comfort with flying slow fliers and me not being good flying speed and acrobatics. The plane is bungee launched from an adjustable tow hook. My plane weighs 15 ½ oz, probably on the heavy side due to my corrections for fuselage construction goofs. The wing spar and leading edges are carbon fiber tubes and rods respectively. The fuselage is built-up balsa with a carbon boom and balsa built-up tail feathers. The wing ribs were all very precisely cut, each one number marked, and conveniently stacked together with rubber bands. The spar holes are deliberately undersized, but I found that twisting a tapered reamer BACKWARDS to size the spar hole by slightly compressing the balsa without removing material simplified the wing assembly. The wing tips are removable. The wing angles are all self-fixtured with the connecting tube holes accurately located. The assembled and plugged together wing sections came out to Corky's precise polyhedral dimensions with no further re-work. I was impressed.

Instructions for wing construction are on the full-sized drawing. However, the fuselage drawing is on an 8 ½" x 11" sheet with instructions. Corky told me that being a kit for experienced builders he didn’t feel a full-sized fuselage plan was needed. Again, self-fixturing features made the assembly straight forward and accurate. Very little effort needed to "clean up" to make parts fit and assemble. Excellent material quality.

Assembled and with electronics and NIMH installed, plane balanced to spec by merely shifting battery location. Once trimmed, I subsequently removed the weight of the plastic receiver housing to shift CG back slightly which improved fight. The spoiler is very effective.

In summery, it’s an excellent kit, gratifying to build, relatively inexpensive, and flies great.

May 9th 2021 SBSS Meeting - How to Repair a DLG Boom

How to Repair Your DLG Boom (10 min 51 sec)

This is the May 9th, 2021 Wednesday night program at South Bay Soaring Society (6:30pm PDT, 2nd Wednesday of the month). Go to www.SBSS.org to get a Zoom login for our next monthly meeting.

Throwbot presents how to repair DLG booms, fins and fin/boom attachments. He has experienced with repairing a Twister, Predator II, and a home built carbon fiber plane Burnt Pickle (see previous YouTube SBSS program on this). His latest plane is a Concept X5 from STREAM TEAM. He shows the materials used, how to do a temporary carbon fiber piece to get it aligned and Poly Ply to sap the extra resin out during the cure. After that step he wraps the rest of the break with mono directional carbon fiber and Poly Ply and a sets up to get the entire boom aligned correctly for a final cure.

A couple of points not mentioned here is people often use a piece of right angle aluminum sliding door track to get a straight oriented repair on the boom. Also check the recommend expiration date on your epoxy resin and hardener before using…don’t ask me how I know.
