US Navy P-3 Orion Submarine Chase Plane Adventures

All are invited to South Bay Soaring Society's next program at 7:45pm PDT Wednesday, July 11th, 2018 at the main Saratoga Fire Station or join us on GoTo Meeting (see instructions below).

If you lived in Silicon Valley several years ago, you probably always wondered what those large Navy planes flying continuously out of Moffett Field were doing. Andy Pease will be joining us to talk about P-3 Orion’s anti-submarine mission during the cold war. All they had to do was patrol the Pacific Ocean to find and track invisible submarines. Andy will be talking about the:

Life of a Naval aviator, and how it captures a kid’s imagination
Orion P-3 4-turboprop plane and its capabilities
Anti-submarine warfare
The ditching and rescue of a P-3 Flight out of Adak, Alaska

Noel heard Andy speak at the SAM 21 club and was revetted by his story and thought our club would also benefit from hearing about these naval heroes and their plane.

The South Bay Soaring Society Program is held every 2nd Wednesday of the month at the main Saratoga Fire Station at 14380 Saratoga Ave, Saratoga, CA 95070 (except December and January). The business meeting starts at 6:30pm and the program begins sometime after 7:45pm. Anyone is welcome to attend either meeting and you can bring friends.

Spectacular Spray Painting for Perfect Model Sailplanes (55 min 10 sec)

All are invited to South Bay Soaring Society's next program at 7:45pm PDT Wednesday, September 12th, 2018 at the main Saratoga Fire Station or join us on GoTo Meeting (see instructions below).

At our flying site last week, Russ came with an old RC sailplane that had a paint job that looked like a brand new Lamborghini. I started hitting him up with a ton of questions since I just done some touchup spray painting on my new but used Supra which looked looks like a painted Yugo. Topics he covered and will cover Wednesday include:
  • Surface preparation for painting - sanding, fill, and masking
  • Priming
  • Types of paint - lacquer vs enamel, brands
  • Number and density of coats
  • Types of sprayer - spray cans, air brush, small paint guns
  • Sanding between coats or for the final finish
  • Color coverage considerations
  • Weight considerations
  • Touchup on dings and repairs
  • Drying

If you ever have botched a paint job or if you just want to make you’re repairs become invisible, this will be the program to attend.
