I Just got mine today. I'm painting mine RLM 76 on top and RLM 75 on the bottom. EPO is great to paint as it doesn't really react to much. Most general spray paints are fine, but to be sure do a test patch somewhere. My paint happens to be in tins, so I'm just using a sponge brush out of convenience.

Well, after spending the past few months building my FPV quad and having a blast with it, I am back into this project again. I have been trying to paint it for the past few weeks but have been having issues because I paint in my backyard and we are having a very wet summer. It pretty much rains every single day, typically in the evenings right when I get home from work.

That said the fuselage is about completely painted and I should be able to start on the wings soon. I am using Design Master Colortool #714, Holiday Red, to paint the X8. It's perfectly safe for use on EPO. I also found that the Tamiya TS-8 Italian Red was safe to use as well, but it's expensive, the Design Master is much cheaper. The paint came from the local Michael's craft store.

After painting I am sealing everything with Minwax Polycrylic, in the spray bottle. It's water based and safe for the foam. I grabbed that from Wal-Mart.

I'm still planning on using 5.8ghz for the FPV and will probably use 2.4 Spektrum for the initial flights. I have an EzUHF transmitter/reciever on order but RMRC doesn't know when that will be in.

One thing I'll probably do is reinforce the wings with carbon fiber strips, as detailed in this post from the X8 thread:
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...postcount=1146

Carbon fiber strips available from here:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dproduct=15387
and here:

I read this post over on FPVLAB which got me thinking:
http://fpvlab.com/forums/showthread....l=1#post282729

4.8 miles is more than enough range for the kinds of things I'd like to do. I found that the antenna tracker for my OSD, the RVGS was in stock so I pulled the trigger on one. I have yet to get the Uno reciever, pan & tilt, or helical antenna yet though.

My build log and notes for the X8 would not be complete without this link:

Got the connectors for the motor and ESC all soldered up. Of course, the very next day the Hakko soldering station I ordered shows up.

X8 Skywalker - lost canopy, then receiver then crash

Hi

Sadly I lost my last X8 Skwalker, well when I say lost I smashed it too bits after many flying hours.

I was flying at full speed and level, the canopy flew off, and then it pulled the receiver out and I therefore had no control.

Next time I will secure this better, any suggestion ?

Also any thoughts on replacements canopys and how to reproduce as have lost 2 now.

I'm worried about this myself. I added a hatch latch to my canopy to try and hold it down but I wonder if even that is enough.

Of course, the simplest answer is to just tape it down, that ought to work just fine.

However I'm considering adding a couple of nylon bolts to hold it down. That ought to keep it very secure.

After spending over two years sitting in the hangar collecting dust the X8 is going to have a maiden flight this season. I'm working on the final electronics install now. I put my RVOSD 5 in place last night.

The plan is to maiden it at the Pecan Patch FPV Fly-In in Griffin GA in a week and a half.

I am rushing to finish the build before Pecan Patch tomorrow. Stayed up late last night, it's mostly complete aside from some wiring, programming the RVOSD, and binding the EzUHF receiver.

I attempted a maiden today and it did not go well. I tried to launch with the RVOSD stabilization turned on but things quickly went wrong when it pulled up sharply, stalled, went inverted and into the ground before I could save it.

It's probably repairable but I don't know if I want to bother. The RVOSD is only transmitting a blank screen now, so it's broken.

I'm not sure if I want to continue this project. The X8 turned out to be more trouble than it's worth.
