I used Hobbico HobbyLite. I could not find Famowood. I'll let you know it turns out

Sealing the hull - Aero Gloss after each application of filler?


Hi All,

Just wanted to ask. I have sanded the hull after the first application of filler. Should I apply more filler next or should I apply Aero Gloss, then my next application of filler?

Sanded hull


The Hobbico filler I first used did not work well at all. It sanded off in clumps. So after removing most of the Hobbico filler I got some Famowood filler and it worked awesome.

Good to hear you are happy with the Famowood, its been a real time saver for me.
With a well shaped application tool, its a one shot deal.

Hull ready for Primer


I have applied about six coats of 50/50 Aero Gloss / Thinner sanding between coats. My next step is to apply primer. I plan to wet sand between coats of primer. Any comments would be appreciated

Made home to my parents for Easter weekend. Here are some pictures of my Dad's boat. Took quite bit of dusting off (thirty year's worth?). Near as we could figure it was completed sometime between '68 and '70. Dad couldn't explain the reason for the jet drive conversion. It was just something he picked up when he got the boat. It was probably something too cool to pass up. This boat was built with dad's first proportional radio gear. Everything previous to this was push button, so it was a major advancement in the day. The radio alone cost $500 at the time (about $2700 in today's dollar).

The diesel was started with a belt looped on the flywheel pulley. I remember it was hard to start. A feed off the jet drive fed a water cooling jacket and out a hose off the back of the boat near the water line. The exhaust was connected to a slightly larger pipe, also out the stern near the water line. You'd think that twin diesel jet drive would go like stink, but Dad said it barely moved the boat. Judging from the water line, I suspect the jet drive never did fill completely and mostly just frothed up air and water. The diesel is completely seized now, there's no way it'll turn without a complete tear down and rebuild.

The outer hull was fibre glassed (something not called for in the instructions).

You can see the search light mounting arm, and the glue repair (oops). I see that's not the only part of the boat that's been broken and glued, so I guess I can't take all the blame anymore.

After a good cleaning it went back on the shelf, where it will probably spend another thirty years accumulating dust. Enjoy.
