prop breaks in mid flight on Turnigy HAL quad.

so i am flying along today with the new Turnigy HAL quad and it begins to make a REALLY LOUD noise. I land immediately thinking a motor was rotating on the boom but it was a broken prop. Half of it was GONE what kind of props do you use? These were Hobby king props they are highly visible but are flimsy as all get out. I have been using slowfly APCs with no problem but i am thinking i need to got to a heavier prop. any comments appreciated.

do you balance them? if you don't, that'll contribute to them breaking. they're definitely weak though

i got some gemfans and they seem a little more rigid than the HK ones. not sure if they'll be much better for your situation but it's helped me a bit

I only use GemFan props and I buy them from Dan Phillips from DIYQuadcopters.com

You can often see his posts in the classifieds here.

I started this hobby using HobbyKing cheap props... and found out quickly its a bad idea

RC Timer do a range of good quality carbon props at very reasonable prices - they're working well on my Y6.

Don't know how the full carbon props from RC Timer perform but I have gone through two sets of RC Timer carbon reinforced, three sets of composite Hobby King props, and am now on GemFan carbon mix props. There is a huge difference between the RC Timer and HK props versus the GemFan. The HK even has the same markings as the GemFan but here is a visible difference in color and when balancing it is apparent that they are made from different materials. The RC Timer and Hobby King props would break under simple impacts (grass even) where as the GemFans have been very resilient and I have yet to even chip one. The GemFans are also noticeably stiffer than the others. From here on out I wouldn't even consider the RC Timer or HobbyKing composite props.

Guys, thanks for your input I think I'll go with some of the Gem fan props as they "appear" to have a great reputation. Now to see how long it takes them to get in stock...Every thing quad copter related is out of stock ....

I'll run APC till then ;-/

thatnks again for your input.

I suggest the Carbon Reinforced props for just alittle more. They will NOT fail in the air.

Got the 10x4.5 GEM FAN props finally and they are as much stiffer than APC as APC is stiffer than the HK props.. very nice, well made and balance is pretty spot on.. easily painted them florescent orange and balanced. no noisy fluttering in fast forward flight. on the Hal or flame-wheel clone. thank you guys for the source info.

question about that link

I never wanted any of the phantom prop upgrades because they are not slow fly and require a 50% increase in throttle to hold the same rise and hover abilities over stock white phantom ones...and hub fit is usually an issue. Those 8x4/5 in there look like slow flyer with carbon reinforcement...now if we could just get dji hubs in them that would be rock n roll
