Build Log

PBY Catalina 80" Wingspan UPDATE 03/05/14

PBY (1 min 40 sec)

Well here is a hint at what's on my build table... Can you guess what it will turn into? It was involved in WW2 and loved by it's crews... Well no guesses so I'll let the Cat out of the bag... Mudman1959

Update 02/21/13
The build is going good so far... The main structure is a sealed "I" beam with the frames slid down and glued. Working on the tail section now and the skin is real hard to do in the tight bend areas. I found if you take the foam and roll it in a U shape and work it back and forth the foam tends to be more pliable. The cockpit area is done and I was just goofing around with the marker. I still need to work on the nose a bit, it needs more of an angle cut for the top forward section. I need to get some long servo leads for the tail servos... Still lots to do! Mudman1959

Update 02/26/13
Working on the tail, I need to get the control rods installed. one side is covered while the other side is still open. Feels like it will be strong enough to fly... I hope!

Update 02/27/13
Got the rudder covered and then looked at a few Cat photos... well it looks like the x-acto knife will be cutting again as the stabilizer goes thru the center of the rudder. I guess the plans I have simplified this area and did not show this area clearly. Good thing the rudder is mostly foam... Mudman1959

Update 03/03/13
Worked on the tail some more... looks closer to the real thing. Not perfect but it will do. Also got the wing support pylon glued in... Mudman1959

Update 03/11/13
Finally finished the tail surfaces and also finished sheeting the forward fuselage. The tail surfaces should look good painted as they simulate a fabric surface... Mudman1959

I want to use my 2.4 to run my tug boat, what do I need to do that. I can barrow a reciever from one of the planes but I need a motor controller. What do I look for?

Update 03/21/13

Worked on the battery bay which can hold two 2500mah 11.1 Lipos with a bit of room to spare. I added quite a bit of weight to the forward section of the battery bay to assist with the balance. I will not add anymore until the plane is closer to being completed as the motors will be forward of the CG. All up weight so far is at 4 pounds and if I can get this bird into the 6 to 7 pound dry weight without the batteries it should perform close to the real airplanes performance. It will not be a rocket but it should be realistic in flight characteristics. The original PBY had a good payload and with the thickness and chord of the wing I think it will fly good... Mudman1959

PBY Update 04/18

Finally got all the bits and pieces for the wing and got a good start on the center section, it's not fully glued yet. I put a 3/4 inch aluminum tube just behind the spars. I intend to add supports to the spars as you would with a balsa plane, should prove to be quite strong after the foam skin is installed. More to come... Mudman1959

SlayerNZ... Any plans for retracts? I have provisions built in mine if I can find a set that will fit or find someone to make some for me... What do you figure yours will weigh when it's finished? I am hoping to keep mine under 10 pounds, so far it's around 4.5 pounds... I grew up around the PBY and had several rides in it with both water and land landings and takeoffs.... Mudman1959

Hey, I have decided to not do retracts for the same reason as you, century jet make some but I would need to re mortgage the house to be able to afford them Mine will weigh about 20-25 pounds

Pby...

Started working on the R/H wing panel. I doubled up on the ribs at the wing break for a bit more strength. I also doubled up on the aileron support brace. I finally received my servos and installed the rudder and elevator. I still need to splice the wires then I can finish skinning the tail. The servos were a bit bigger than I expected but they are waterproof and have a bunch of torque so I think they will work out Ok... Mudman1959
