Pics of my first EDF F5 Tiger 11

I have just finished my first edf jet and wanted to show off the pics. I have a mega 16/15/3 motor but have yet to buy the speed control or batteries. Since this is my first electric I don't have any used stuff so was thinking about going lipos but am unsure of the configuration. Please give me any addvice on the bats and the esp. Thanks Mark

That's the Hobby Lobby kit I assume? It's been talked about before but not in a while, a search will turn up info. A Mega 16/16/3 brushless motor on 3S4P (3 series 4 parallel) Thunder Power 8000 mah pack would work, but may be a bit low on power in the 2.5 inch fan. I'd guess that'd pull about 16-18 amps (just a ballpark figure) from memory. That'd be only around say 200 watts, you want more power so the hotter 2 turn might be a better choice on a 3 series lipo (11.1volts, about the same as 10 nicad cells). There are other motors of course, Hacker, Kontronic, etc.

Others will post ideas and numbers.

RCKing,

This F-5, very nice BTW, is definitely from the Vasa kit that Hobby Lobby imports. I am finishing mine up as well. I'm also planning to run the 3 turn Mega, but powered with 14 Sanyo 1950 FAUPs, which is the same weight as a 2 turn Mega and 9 GP 3300 cells and 14 cells seem to be "right" for the 3 turn motor in this jet.

I did a quick calculation and found it takes 4.54 LiPo cells to deliver the same voltage as 14 NiMH cells to the motor. So, the choices appear to be go with 5 LiPo's in series and stay with the 3 turn (assuming this set-up won't pull too many amps for the motor), or switch to a 2 turn motor and 3 LiPo cells in series.

Since you already have the motor, I recommend going with 14 1950 FAUPs for power, at least until you gain more experience with EDFs. (Also, by the time the 1950s wear out, LiPo's should be alot cheaper than they are now) They're great cells, better than the 1700's Hobby Lobby recommends. For speed control, I recommend either the Jeti Advance 40 amp or the Castle Creations Phoenix 45. Both are excellent quality. Be sure to mount the esc in the exhaust duct to help with cooling.

Good luck with your Tiger. Maybe all of us with F-5's need to take a road trip to SoCal to fly with the Newport Beach Mig Patrol

Nice Tiger RCKing Planning a tiger scheme on mine as well. (Pic)
Has 2 flights on Kontronik 400-36 (3600kv) and 10 x 1950FAUP cells and is plenty fast !!
Nearly lost it on last flight caused by radio glitch
Must try some re-routing of equipment before next try..some other e-zoners have same expirience with this model??
