Hobby King Airoso

Has anyone built/flown one of these? I'll be the guinea pig. I have one on order. They seem popular, HK has sold 10 this week. I know...it's Hobby King. Forgive me, for I am on a budget...lol.

Will do...It'll be a while, as it's on a slow boat from China (literally).

I picked one up. Some damage from the trip here but I'll fix it up and see how it goes. I'll post some of my results...when I get a chance to work on it.

Keep us posted on the build weight. I'll do the same.

Suggested set-ups?? 5S?? Looks like a low ground clearance with stock gear?

I'm going with 6S, mostly because I already have 2 packs. With a 500kv motor, should be fast enough. Probably a 16/12 prop.I have this motor in another plane, I will try it first: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=18171

It has arrived, undamaged. I'll pull it out of the packaging and weight it tonight. The fuselage is huge. Let the building commence!

Airoso update

Upon closer examination, I have some observations:

Some minor shipping/handling damage, limited to a broken fuselage former reinforcement and a cracked/loose cowl mounting tab. Not too bad considering the distance from China and the USPS crew.

Check all glue joints. Add thick or thin CA glue as needed. Typical of Chinese ARF's.

Covering job was very good, with a minimum of trapped dust under the covering. A few loose edges. Very bright and creative covering. Should be very visible in the sky.

Servo cut-outs are 30mm x 15mm. Standard servos are too big. You will need strong mini servos.

Massive fuselage and thick root section on the wing. Should help in down-line speed control and make landings easier/slower.

Aggressive wing taper. Should have a fast roll rate. Airfoiled stabilizers a big plus. Tail flying surfaces seem very strong.

Good quality hardware kit. They seem to get better every few build cycles. Sounds like the designers are listening to us.

Things I do not like are limited to the landing gear and the joiner for the elevator halves. I will work around that. I don't like this type of engineering. The landing gear box is not strong. The box construction will not survive many botched landings. This is also typical of many ARF's. Carbon fiber should be used here, and on the landing gear themselves. The aluminum legs are heavy, and will probably bend on the first hard landing.

I predict this plane will build up about 1 lb. heavier than advertised. I don't think this will hurt the flying characteristics too badly.

So, all in all it looks like a good deal. We will see in a few weeks after I maiden her.

Added notes on build

Added notes on the build will be posted here:

Carbon wing tube too long, by maybe 3/16 inches., preventing tight fit of wing to fuselage. Just trim one end until the wing is snug.

Both blind nuts for wing bolts were "buggered up". Cleaned up the threads with a M4 tap.

The DVD/manual is a joke, but if you have built a few ARF's, you will be fine.

Remember that the servo holes/openings are NOT a standard size. Smaller than Futaba 3004, but bigger than most mini's. A lot of the cheaper mini's will not have enough torque, so choose your servos wisely. The Futaba servos to fit the openings were $65 each, so I opted for HK servos. Mixed reviews on the quality of these...I'll let you know after I try them out. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=23468

Nice looking bird. Perhaps a good replacement for my Helios 63e. Do you think these Hitec servos will fit? http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=9813
