Looking to clarify SC2 aircraft qualifications.

I was wondering if anyone can clarify for me what the aircraft regulations are for competing in SC2 contests. Or maybe a better question is, can all of the current (non-electric) Xplorers, Supras, etc. qualify for these events? Or do I have to buy multiple planes to fly all of the rounds in an SC2 event?

Just wondering if there a certain plane that wont qualify? I currently own an electric Calypso which sounds like would qualify for at least ALES, but I would like to buy something a bit more high end.

Very nice you would like to join in on the fun with SC2. Lots and lots of super nice people with great experience and sharing.

Open class; just about anything without a prop.
RES: just that
2M; if they still have it.
Woody; not a separate class yet awarded when flying in one of the classes.
ALES: New and the current rules should be posted somewhere. You will need a hieght limiting device and there are a few different ones.

Thanks for the response!

So it sounds like if I get an RES (Rudder, Elevator, Spoiler?) I can compete in anything pretty much. Where as if I get an Xplorer which has Ailerons and whatnot I cant compete in RES?

So a plane like this I can do it all?

Do I have that right?

Yes, a Supra or any other full house ship is limited to Open or Unlimited class and not RES.
A RES can compete is both RES and Open.

Flying in two classes along with timing for others pilots is quite a challenge, especially for the new to.

Nice choice for the Danny. I still have my Danny XL. Danny's have won many an SC2 contest and also the Visalia contest, which is like a SC2 on steroids with many super top pilots.
Just looked it up, Danny in 2nd and 3rd place at Visalia RES back in 2006, myself flying my Danny XL awarded 3rd place. Tough to beet Skip Miller.
Plus with the Danny, you have Alberto at Hobby for support who is the great.

Thanks so much for the responses Jared... one question.

What would make a plane able to fly in Unlimited but not OPEN (or vice versa)? What are the restrictions there?

Sorry to confuse, as Open and Unlimited are the same. There are just called differently at different contest.
I just could not remember what SC2 designation was/is as four years past.

Actually we don't have open or unlimited etc...

We have -


You can fly anything you want without a motor that can go up a winch in the above classes.

Anything without a motor limited to Rudder/Elevator/Spoiler

Must be mostly of wood construction, can have glass/composite fuse. Only composite in wing can be spar reinforcement. No motor

Anything 2m, no motor.

Anything with a motor and limiter set to 150m

And we have a foamy class for things like Radians, etc.. allowed a 30 sec motor run

Thanks for the info everyone... one thing comes to mind..

If a plane can take a hi-start.... can it generally withstand a winch launch? Or is a winch launch a much more intense situation?
