New Forum Poll -

Forum Name: AquaNet - "Homebrew" Hardware & Software Systems for Watercraft

Category: Boats - top level

Description: A forum for alternative Open Source Technology for Digital Command, Control and Communications (C3) Systems for Digitally Controlled Watercraft including real-time Telemetry and Video returns and logging.

Justification: To facilitate communications and technology transfer within the model boating community, particularly between members of R/C Groups, regarding alternative open source methods of controlling, automating and animating our watercraft as well as encouraging a "Stanford Homebrew' style cybernetics culture based around open source and open source ideals.

Currently the information on automating or making our boats more autonomous or using the expanding number of alternative control systems and technologies such as the Raspberry PI (Rπ) and the Arduino system families, is spread piecemeal throughout the web and hardcopy worlds and very little, if any, is directed at model boaters. The aviation community has seen the urgent necessity of creating separate technology forums for experimentation, design, construction and dissemination of these devices and techniques. It is obvious that boaters must follow suit.

If the cybernetic Boating community is to begin designing and developing items and instrumentalities, we need a place to commune and share. Not just as lone modelers and engineers who individually peek, poke and peruse in the aircraft forums, the blogs over at Make Magazine's site or robotics forums which may, but more often do not, address the issues we need to solve, especially as boating is the disregarded rump of the RC community to many. Outside of a very few dedicated vendors and artisanal manufacturers specific to boating, no one develops anything specifically for us any longer. We must adapt, nay, hack, aircraft, robotics or car technologies for aquatic environments and our purposes.

We desperately need a place of our own to do so, to exchange data, experiences gained in our successes as well as failures, our designs and other works as well as keeping, sharing and disseminating build logs of our equipment and experiments.

One very minor detail.... Apparently the general consensus amongst the posters in the seminal thread requesting this forum appears to be we drop "Aquanet" from the name. " "Homebrew" Hardware & Software Systems for Watercraft"

Well that's a shame. IMHO it may not be a net right now or maybe within the year, but it won't take long to be one. Mark my words, with internet, wifi and surely satellite technologies available, it won't take long until we're all using the same backbones. IMHO.

Much too limiting!

The Arduino and Rπ families of devices are great, but who knows what tomorrow may bring in either hardware, software or who knows what*.

A lot of the solutions and projects the forum will hopefully attract will probably be probably include scratch-built hardware, hardware hacks of existing R/C systems, an OS for model boats or again, who knows what. Nothin' says we can't hack servos too!

Again, I going to point back on the old Homebrew Club ethos that gave us the computer revolution in the first place, be as inclusive as possible, share as much as possible and teach the n00bs, for, verily, we were all n00bs once..

IF I were to make a major change, I'd say keep it simple and 'elegant:' Homebrew Systems for Watercraft or Homebrew Solutions for Watercraft, that keeps the focus on open, homebrew systems and software designed for on model boats of any type. (Being a traditionalist, I'd really prefer "Homebrew Hacks for Watercraft" but that might make the SysAdmins nervous.)

*for example - Android, Beagleboard, Chumby, Kovan, PIC family / Pinguino, DE0-Nano (FPGA Based tech), The Parallax Propeller, PicAxe, maybe even someday something like Parallella, etc.

well you could always go to the ROV topic and just sorta TAKE IT OVER

there is NOT a lot of activity on it. couple of years, and not a lot of threads/replies

just a thought...

Although a conquest or two before scaling up to world domination might be fun.....
