Venom Charge Box

I see Venom are offering an alternative to the safe sack for Lipo charging .
The descriptive blurb attached to the picture mentions that there is a clear polycarbonate cover for easy observation .
No doubt they have done extensive product testing where I am aware of the impact strength of polycarb but has anyone got comments as to the fire resistant properties ?

Jim
I haven't found any test videos. Anybody see one?

Some of my first jobs involved working with polycarbonates (A.K.A. Lexan) it does burn. not violently, but much like any other carbon based plastic, like PlexiGlass or styrene. Worse it melts as it burns, creating drops of liquid fire. I would replace the Lexan with metal if I were you. Why anyone would have a need to watch their expensive lipos go up in smoke anyway I have no idea.

In the video they say 60 watt max for battery size is the limit anything larger it won't contain the fire... so that will be a 2S 8000 pack for it's limit.

seems pretty good.

I believe they probably mean 60 watts electrical size (capacity), not physical size.

First order approximation ... take the battery voltage and multiply it by the capacity.
For example, a common 3S (11.1V) 2200mAH pack would be 11.1 * 2.2 = 24Watts

They must have decided how much energy can be handled by the enclosure based on a battery pack of a fixed "size" having an uncontained thermal event, based on the amount of lithium that would be present in the pack and the oxygen in the enclosure.

Let's see a video of a 2s 8000mah pack igniting in one.

A man with the same thinking as myself !
With a flow remperature of 155 C (311 F). along with the earlier comments by Fly Wheel it would be an interesting event .
On the other hand one cannot see a concern like Venom not conducting tests to ensure they were not faced with a rush of claims following fire damage

You'd think so, but I wouldn't buy one without seeing the test results.

Polycarb window is to see a lipo puffing before an event-This is not a device for charging lipo's unattended! It's a good safety item -you can shut down charger power if you see puffing and it has a handle so you can safely move it away from burnable items.

It's the perfect marketing ploy. If your battery goes up throw the whole thing out the window and let the charger get incinerated too. Now you can buy a new charger

Or use a lipo sack and yank the wires and throw that out the window and still have a charger afterwards, well that is unless the charger caused the fire.
