My nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Daniel Barenboim.

And for those wondering if the West Eastern Divan Orchestra is just a gimmick, they are in fact a world-class orchestra. Here they are performing at the celebrated BBC Proms (joined by the National Youth Choir of Great Britain), in London's Royal Albert Hall:
Beethoven Symphony No. 9 - Mvt. 4 - Barenboim/West-Eastern Divan Orchestra (29 min 54 sec)

I think Rahm Emanual would be a good prize winner. He IS the mayor of Chicago, and although Chicago has a problem with guns and murders, Rahm wants to take away guns. So, isn't that the main thing anyway? What you WANT to do? Like obama got the prize, not for what he did, but for what he SAID he wanted to do.

I think everyone has the right to a nobel piece prize, and the govt should provide it, except for gun owners. Gun owners shouldn't get prizes.

Well, let's assume there was an award for peace that you thought was legit. Who would you nominate as this year's awardee? Please include some description of your choice. I love reading about people working for peace.

NPP has been effectively rendered worthless by bestowing that honor on the totally worthless. How can they fix that?

The Nobel is the most famous, but I'm fine with not referring to it directly. Let's assume there was an award for peace that you thought was legit. Who would you nominate as this year's awardee? Please include some description of your choice. I love reading about people working for peace.

The girl who was shot by the taliban for advocating womens rights. While not a "peace" campaign, still worthy of consideration imo

Aung San Suu Kyi from Burma. Although she won the NPP in 1991 there is precedence for winning it multiple times. A most remarkable person who's never allowed herself to be intimidated by the repressive Burmese military rulers and still fights for democracy in Burma.

I couldn't agree more. The day is coming when somebody wins it, and then declines.

Both really amazing stories. I read today that the Pakistani girl is recovering from reconstructive surgery. Brain damage may be minimal.

Well that's an easy one. I will refer you to one of my few personal heroes...

There recently was a death of a 98 year old lady named Irena.

During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist.

She had an ulterior motive...

She KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews, (being German).

Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of her tool box she carried, and she carried in the back of her truck a Burlap sack, (for larger kids).

She also had a dog in the back, that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in, and out of the ghetto.

The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog, and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.

During her time and course of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants.

She was caught, and the Nazi's broke both her legs, and arms, and beat her severely.

Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out, and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard.

After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it, and reunited the family.

Most of course had been gassed.

Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes, or adopted.

Recently Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize....

She LOST.

Al Gore won, for a slide show on Global Warming.
