Vic Smeed "Mams'elle" -- Britplan Build Off, January 2013 to June 2013

Here's the official "first post" for the Mams'elle. The PDF version of the plans can be found at Outerzone . As I did with the Envoy, I'm starting with reworking the plan sheets for RC conversion. Attached is a first draft of the rudder and subfin, showing the necessary alterations for a moving rudder.

Another one of my favourite aeroplanes! Subscribed, and I have posted the link to the Build Off thread Post #1.

The DPI resolution bug is trying to bite again between Inkscape and GIMP, and I'm going to have to try something different. I'm going to eliminate GIMP from the mix and work exclusively in Inkscape this time.

To start this process, I'm using Inkscape's "Print Preview" to save nine PDF sections that will be stitched together. The base document is sized at US Legal (8 1/2" x 14"), and each segment contains a portion of the image that fits within those dimensions, minus a border area. These segments appear to come out correctly sized to the original PDF.

Attached below is a ZIP file with all nine segments.

Note this is only a copy of the original PDF, and does not yet contain my conversion work for RC or electric. Think of it as the "base document" for this build.

Attached to this post is a zip file containing the patterns for formers, ribs, tips, and rudder parts for the original version.

For those not familiar with GIMP or INKSCAPE...

GIMP is often called "Poor man's Adobe Photoshop"...

INKSCAPE can thus be thought of as "Poor man's Corel Draw"...

GIMP & Photoshop work on bitmap images. Inkscape & Corel Draw work on vector graphic images. For the kind of work required with these plan sets and patterns, Inkscape is by far easier to work with, and produces cleaner output. It is also scalable, meaning any image can be up-sized or down-sized according to a percentage, and everything comes out accurate.

Day 2 -- Rudder Plan

Attached is a corrected and revised rudder plan. I wanted to retain the "open frame" feel of the original, instead of the "solid slab" that I used on the Envoy. The new version runs down between two stabilizer ribs (an alteration to this plan) instead of just being glued to the top of the stabilizer. A bit more "positive retention"...

This drawing should also be normal size to the original plan.

So I'M meant to be in control?

....I'd still do a laminated outline

Good Inkscape work - I must persevere with it!

I'm in. Always liked the Mams'elle.
I downloaded gimp last week and used it to create the tile print for the Coquette, took me no time at all, nice software.

Day 3 -- More Plan Work

Attached below is a full-size PDF and an SVG of my revised plan sheet. The SVG file contains layers with each of the patterns in its own layer. You can print these out to produce a copy if you so desire.

A trip to the LHS in on for today, so I should be picking up some balsa to start mangling.

The attached plans do not show radio placement or engine conversions.

Day 3 -- Progress Report

Got some 3/16" sheet for the tail parts. Aluminum tubing and some music wire for the Envoy might also work for this one. Should start mangling tonight or tomorrow...

Still thinking about which motor for this one, possibly the same as the Envoy...

More to come...

Day 3 -- Balsa Mangling At Last!

The first pieces of mangled balsa have emerged. As before, I'm starting with the easiest area of the plane -- the rudder. Photo 1 shows the carnage...

Day 4 -- Progress Report

The rudder cooked overnight under the pins, and this morning I removed it from the board for initial sanding.

Stabilizer comes next...

I'm impressed that you are "multi-tasking" - this AND the Envoy!
