Latest News!

The 'Old' News

Greetings all....

As Power Squadron Officer for the San Francisco Model Yacht Club, I am here to gauge interest in holding another Steam-Up, A Model Maritime Live Steam event this upcoming August in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park on Spreckels Lake as we have done in the past though we are looking at possibly revamping the format a bit this year.

So..... What would you like? Would you like it to be a Saturday, a Sunday or both?
Is the weekend 17th good for you?
(On the weekend before, the Lake is closed due to OUTSIDE LANDS, a huge multi-concert and cultural event)

What other activities would you like to see other than ship handling contest and a Concours? No host dinner Saturday evening? What's you're pleasure.

Talk to me guys! We are in the planning stages and just about everything may be possible. we want to make this year the best one yet.
All comments and suggestions are welcome

Capt. Lee and Nick Monahan (late of Monahan Steam Models) chat during set-up behind
a row of steam powered boats made by Dave Gallagher, John Brock and himself.

Alan J. Zulberti with his model of the Steamship Tahoe.

"LS Dolly" from the Ullswater, circa 1850. Anthony Wheeler, Builder/Skipper and, of course,
there would flowers in M'Ladys cabin! Hot water in the wee boiler for tea as well!

Based on the Krick Victoria Steam River Launch, the "Victoria" is another boat built and
skippered by Dave Gallagher. The "Victoria" has a Cheddar "Gemini" Vertical Twin
powerplant and was Dave's first boat.

Don Cucci's "LUISA C." one very, very powerful boat!!!

Dave Gallagher's Krick "Victoria" (top) and John Brock's Fantail Launch (center)
cross the bow of the Alan J. Zulberti's Lake Steamer "Tahoe" during free running.

A possible conflict/issue was raised recently by a couple of folks regarding the date. According to rumor published in the Nautical News, the Spreckles Lake Area would be closed to vehicles on Saturday, 21 Sept. when the Steam-Up was scheduled.

This is NOT TRUE!

I have been over to see the appropriate folks with SF Recreation and Parks Department and while the SF Bike Coalition’s “Tour de’Fat,” is scheduled at nearby Lindley Meadow, about a third of a mile to the east of Spreckels Lake, the Tour will not close John F. Kennedy Drive and should not have even a minimal impact on our Steam-Up event according to Rec. and Park’s permitting Staff.
  1. Steam-up begins at 3 bells of the Fore-Noon watch (09:30) and the Bike event does not even begin assembling its riders before 10am.

  2. The “Tour” ride itself will not get started until after “11ish,” and while the Tour’s ride-path will pass by Spreckels Lake proceeding west under police and ranger escort on J.F.Kennedy Drive, it should be come and gone within less than 10 to 15 minutes.
So basically, as long as you get to Spreckels by 10 minutes or so before 6 Bells Fore-Noon, (11:00am) you shouldn’t even notice the bikers.

To totally avoid any possible conflict, just enter Golden Gate Park from the north at 36th Avenue and Fulton Street.

Looking forward to seeing you there!!!

In response to PMs/questions about the Spreckels Steam-Up....

Location: South side of the Lake along John F. Kennedy Drive,

Closest entrances: (north) Fulton Street and 36th Ave., (south) 41st and Lincoln Avenue. Google Map

Time: Setup starts about 9:30am and the event will run until it is 'out of steam.'

Road Closures: None - possible traffic jam due to bikes around 11am due to SF Bike Coalition event but have been assured that it will be transitory - about 15 minutes.

Rain: If it rains heavily enough to cancel, then we will postpone to Sept. 28 and run with the Tug Fest. (10 day forecast)

No registration or fees! Just come and have fun with other steam boaters!

More answers regarding the Spreckels Steam-Up...

Have gotten a number of RSVPs (definitely lookin' good!) and a couple of more questions....

Food is bring your own, the Club will not be providing lunch nor is there a barbecue area near the Lake. However there is a hot dog stand that usually sets up near the power run area on weekends with hot dogs, hot links, pretzels, sodas and other moderately overpriced goodies.

Bring your own display tables if you have them. The display / pit area will be roped off to protect the models and the speed restricted scale run area will be enforced as well!

Definitely, but I'm also up to my ears in photos of two National Championship Regattas for AMYA, the I-54s and the Santa Barbaras so I have to get those rolling as well. May take me a few days but I WILL get them posted!

This also assumes I get some help running things because I just cannot run the Steam-Up and shoot pictures at the same time .

Looks to be a nice day, a bit cool, but not (yet) wet... looks like we will dodge the rain!

The rain ceased to be light and really started to come down hard in intermittent squalls, so we decided to not let all that rain get the boats wet and we decieded to call the event at about 10:00. When I left about 12:00 after putting things away, it was absolutely pouring.

To everyone who did turn out, Thank You So Much!! Some folks had driven over four hours to participate and we had a number of newcomers who came to the Lake as well, along with some of the regulars. It would have been a pretty coot event with a good turnout and some of the boats were quite beautiful (even as they sat in the trunk of a car or the back of a van)!

The most common refrain after the grumbeling was "But it was so nice and sunny when I left home.... "
Hopefully everyone will be able to make the rescheduled (again) Steam-Up.

Well, I guess I can be thankful I didn't make the 1000 mile and $1000 round trip for a rained out event.
