Looks like a Super crisp job on the frames ~

What type of ply is it, and what thickness did you end up choosing ?

Grav- You were asking about planking patterns... always best if you can see what they did on your actual boat... but here are some samples from Building Chris Crafts. Note that the planks aren't fully "spiled" after all (varying widths at each frame), but there are some interesting placements. Also, I don't know if the planks could be straight, or if they had some of those odd curvatures I mentioned to wrap around the bow flare...

The frames are 1/8th aircraft birch plywood. The keel doubler is 1/8th lite ply. The keel and stem are two layers of 3/16 balsa wood. It was good to just cut some wood and not worry about little pieces of styrene.

Understood on the wood.

I am sure a pleasant change from working plastic.

I placed a request on the forum over at Wooden Boats about planking techniques. I got a couple of replies and then I got a message from this gentleman. Here is a link to his models. All I can say is WOW! http://homepages.vvm.com/~btbldr/

GRAVMAN- What a blast from the past at looking at the pictures of the old customers projects in your quest for planking patterns. I recognized many of the builders in the projects as customers of M.A.C.K. from up to twenty years ago. I had forgotten about JOHN CAMPBELL, the fellow who was building the multiple Hacker Models for sale.

He is isn't he. I am hoping to get info on planking from him. I also asked him if he would join us here and show us how he does what he does.

Seen this Grav? 1940 Chris-Craft Barrel Back , this is the start of a Dumas BB I started long ago. After building the Dumas 1930 24 C~C I wanted to do the planking like the big boats. It was less intimidating than it looks. I think it came out great.

It did come out looking great. Seeing what you did makes me believe it is worth the effort to give it a try. I still have a good way to go before the planking needs to be added but I am looking forward to trying something new. Thanks for posting the info, it is a fine model.

BOB,I was just reading your thread about the Barrel Back.I to started with a Laughing Whale, which I never built, still have it.Then went on and built the 1930 CC 24'. Next I started a Barrel Back and like you ,life got in the way and it sat on the shelf for at least 10 years and I finished it about 3 years ago.....Strange..Didn't mean to hijack the thread.
