Build Log

80 Inch Osprey

I have started making the wing core cutting templates for an 80 inch Osprey. It will be constructed of 1.9 oz EPP . Approx 960 sq. in. Here is a sketch of the project.

Steve, I haven't decided that yet. A one piece wing will be stronger and simpler to build. I will have to check to see if an 80" wing will fit in my Ridgeline.

Progress so far . I have cut the cores today. It is obvious that I will need to section the wing. It is simply too long. the templates are made from 1/16" aluminum.

Here is the progress so far. I printed out wing drawing and lightly attached via Dupont 77 spray. using my band saw and razor knife I trimmed the outline. I was unhappy with the wingtips as they were much thicker than I anticipated and looked very draggy. I decided to trim the tip with a zona saw. While studying this I made the decision to alter the dihedral of the wing to raise the wingtips and give a more birdlike appearance. The wing is around an 80 inch span and I decided to make them in 2 separate pieces. These will attach via 1/4" graphite spars and held in place with rare earth magnets

Progress to date. I have mostly completed the fuselage and attached the tail feathers. Made some slight modifications : lowered win 1/2" and raised the tail 1/2 inch. It would have been easier to build the body in 3 parts, but I was wanting to save foam. I will install the elevator servos and motor tomorrow. Should be ready to maiden this week. I will wait to see it fly prior to painting.

Good progress. Are you good with the wingtip feather thickness?
Looking forward to the maiden flight!

Steve They could be thinner, but would be too fragile. The plane is complete enough for glide test tomorrow if the wind cooperates. A few photos

Sebastion, I will try to post plans once I have worked out every thing. I cannot seem to get windows 8 to recognize my Sony Camcorder in the USB port. I won't be able to post video until I figure it out. I really hate system 8. Anyone know what to do?
