Tricopter Rudder Motor tilt vs control surface?

I was rebuilding my rudder mechanism today and I remember seeing another design that used a strip of wood to deflect thrust rather than tilting the motor.

What would be the advantage of this type of design compared to traditional yaw mechanisms?
