Is this enough power?

Evening all!

The wife bought me the HobbyKing E-Fair electric glider for Christmas, but do I have enough power?
The model inc 1500mah 3s lipo, weighs 580g. I have a 28/31 1000kv outrunner turning a 7.5x4 folding prop. This gives around 70 watts at 6'ish amps.

Would this be ok? I've never flown a glider before so I'm not sure what I should be aiming for.

Many thanks

Hi, Daz.

As motors get smaller it gets a bit harder to predict their performance. There just isn't much margin. The general rule is roughly 100-150 watts per 500 grams so you would be on the low end of the scale. Could you go with a larger prop without frying your motor and/or ESC? If one keeps in mind that a glider's motor isn't run for long periods one can push a quality motor pretty close to its limits. I would say that it will fly either way but it won't be able to climb very fast. But? One could give it a try as is and see how it works.

Hi Peter.
The ESC is 25amp (35 burst) and the motor is rated to 150w, so there's plenty of scope. Would I go bigger in diameter or pitch?

Bigger diameter. One adds diameter for thrust and pitch for speed. At the speed of most gliders there's very little reason for a high pitch. Just guessing here but I would think your motor would work with a 9X4 or 9X5 prop. A 10X4 might even be a possibility. Assuming 150 watts you would still be well under 20 amps, assuming my rusty math skills aren't deceiving me, and would get very decent performance.

There are many vendors but Air Craft seems to have the best selection for low pitch folding props. Of course, in Europe, there are plenty of places that offer the whole Graupner line but this will provide a reference of what's available.

Cheers again!
