New Year's Day 2013 Fly-In

Our annual New Year's Day Fly-In was very successful. We had 9 fliers, 5 guests, and 1 spouse (Mary Ann is a keeper!).

The breakfast venue was changed to La Cocina this year. Nobody walked away hungry and we were fueled for the day. I'd recommend the huevos rancheros, green.

In the group photo, from left to right:
(front row) Marc, Russ, Mark
(back row) Pat, Ross, Tom, Art, Randy, Mary Ann, Ray

All fliers who put a plane in the air today got a commemorative sticker. Thanks to Tom for designing the stickers and Russ for having them made.

Pat's "Paper Airplane"

It's hard for Pat to surprise anyone anymore, but he did it again. This time he brought a foam-core scratch built "paper airplane" that he named the 4-Da-Tude.

The controls are elevons. It has a tow hook but nobody had a tow plane. So the 4-Da-Tude had a hand launch maiden flight thanks to Russ's leg power. Ross reports there is sufficient control.

Stay tuned for a full flight report when a tug can supply some altitude for the 4-Da-Tude.

Art's Beaver

Art maidened his foam de Havilland Beaver today. It flew great! It's hard to take a bad photo of a plane that pretty.

The skis for it might have come in handy today. But Art managed just fine on the wheels.

Russ's PA Katana Mini on Skis

Russ was the first in the sky today with his PA Katana Mini. The Katana was fitted with skis today.

Russ was having entirely too much fun. Not even a slightly malfunctioning left ski seemed to have any ill effect.

Randy's Skyraider Mach II

Randy's Skyraider Mach II looks fast even standing still. Randy probably had more flight time on his plane than anybody else today.

Ross's P-51

Ross brought out his foam P-51. As usual, it was a great flier.

Tom's Fazer

Tom had his Fazer going fast and turning left!

Mary Ann was the only spouse in attendance so she gets extra points. The propane heater helped keep her warm.

Ray's Fazer

Not to be outdone, Ray also had a Fazer ripping up the sky.

But we all really want to see Ray's big EDF jet. Maybe next year?

Mark flies the BluBaby

The BluBaby named Norma was available for any pilot to fly who wanted to get their commemorative sticker. A number of pilots took advantage of this and "New Year's Norma" didn't let them down.

Mark, Randy, Pat, Ray, and Marc all took the sticks of Norma.

Art's Sukhoi

Art's Sukhoi was flying great today. That is until it wasn't. I'm not sure what happened.

I usually don't like to post carnage, but Art's Sukhoi has been a great plane with hundreds of flights so I think she deserves one last open casket viewing.

RIP

Marc's T-Rex 450

There is a little switch on a helicopter radio called "flight mode". If you forget to flip this switch, you'll have no negative pitch when you go inverted. Then you get to watch your helicopter slowly descend to the ground, blade side first. It's actually kind of pretty except for the last couple milliseconds.

Russ's Vector 40

And last but not least is Russ's Vector 40. A sexy plane on a string.
