BTW, I fiddled a bit with the antennas today - used a telescope (from inside behind a window) and then also confirmed outside using the sound (weighted the copter to stay on the ground).
Summary - I don't think there is any easy way to extend the range very far with the stock setup. The existing antennas on the quad and trace are 1/4 wave at about 29mm long. I tried extending either or both to 1/2 way, with no difference or even worse connection. I also tried the quickie aluminum foil parabolic with no success - although I suspect with a perfect setup something might be gained from this. My range - outside on a horizontal - appears to be 120-140 feet maximum. At the longer distance I can hear the copter sputter when my hand blocks the trace from it! Maybe someone will report results with a better tx....if they can get it to bind. But, for now, if you want to keep your copter stay within about 100 feet and line of sight! |

The connection should be worse--lots worse. An end-fed half-wave monopole has a very high impedance--in the thousands of ohms. You would need some sort of L-C network to match it. A better solution might be to cut the trace to the antenna on the PC board and build a little half-wave coaxial dipole to replace it. But I'm not ready to butcher my transmitter yet.
While you've got yours apart, what happens if you extend the antennas to 3/4 wave? |

The complete package.

simply adding a half wave is not very effective, to get the most out of that you need a phasing loop between the excisting antenna and the added wire, that way it acts like a wave in a pool adding to another wave.

Hi all, received my X-1 on Saturday after almost killing a Walkera Ladybird!! I decided to see if there was a sim program to try to learn on, I was searching and reading on Amazon and saw the X-1 and though to myself for 35.00 I could learn on this and if I kill it, not so much of a problem!! Definitely a good decision! Been flying it the past couple of days, this evening I made it from the dining room table, through the living room and into the foyer with no mishaps!!
A couple of questions after reading all the posts in this thread: 1. In a hover, should you have to continuously be making tiny adjustments, mostly to the throttle, but also a little to stay in position, or are you able to pretty much let go of the sticks and the X-1 stay in place? I have been very careful on the initialization on a flat surface and also have adjusted the trims a little, nothing major, it just seems to drift a little. I am also trying to hover at around 4 feet so should be getting much ground effects and the house isn't majorly drafty. 2. Been looking at a better transmitter, the Turnigy 9x looks pretty interesting, from what I understand from my reading is that I need the transmitter and a module, to get it to bind with the X-1, is that correct, what exactly will I need, if I decide to pull the trigger on that purchase. One last thing, I know this post has gotten long, but I have to say I am very impressed with how helpful and courteous everyone seems on this thread, no one is clobbering the new folks and everyone seems very friendly, way cool!! |

Hi, and welcome to RCGroups!!! Nice to have another x1 flier here.
Couple of quick answers... #1 : yeah, mine does this too. The X1 only has gyros and not accelerometers (like the Walkera V1 Ladybird) so it has no way of knowing "absolute up". It will drift. #2 : You can get one of these: https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...Firmware_.html or one of these: http://www.xheli.com/79p-th9x-r9b-9channel-radio.html and you'll be good to go! Note: I assume you're flying mode 2 and are in the US. If not then my recommendations above might differ. Since I fly mode 2 and am in the US, I find those two options to be the best. |

#1 With good initialization, I could pretty much do hands-free hover. It is normal for the quad to drift a little. After all it is sensitive to any air flow in the surroundings. But it doesn't jerk around, and corrections are very easy. #2 There are different models of Turnigy Radio. If you look at the one I recommended in the Post #2, you do not need to anything else to fly the X1, the WL-Toys V911/929/939/949/959, and the GW-9958/9998/.... etc. You would only need modules if you buy the 9x w/o module, or the 9XR. |

I'm having way too much fun with this thing. Flysky 9x radio is definitely the way to go. The florescent orange paint makes all the difference in keeping track of the front end and the portable level surface makes initiation of the gyro a snap anywhere I fly. Hands down the best cheap R/C entertainment out there.

That said, simply adding a quarter wave will not add much in the way of gain, only solve the impedance problem. |

Hehe, I know what you mean about the T9x. I'm very glad that I got in before the masses discovered it. Since then it was in-stock for minutes, and it's gone! It's definitely worth the investment. So, if HK is taking back order, I would suggest submitting the order so you're in line for the next shipment. Otherwise, you'll be on the sideline for a long while, unless you pay the ridiculous high price for it.

http://www.xheli.com/79p-th9x-r9b-9channel-radio.html This is *EXACTLY* the same radio as the Turnigy 9x. It differs only in color and branding. Technically, I'm told that there is no functional difference. It's a little more pricy but don't forget that you're paying shipping at HobbyKing as well. |
