How to add functional steering to an RC Toy?

They have several toy quality RC cars out there that steer by backing up, and using a "caster" to turn the car in reverse. Just wondering what parts/techniques anyone has heard of that could be used to make the front wheels actually steer via a hobby grade servo. The motor/ESC is the easy part. Maybe just use a whole new chassis? But that puts using the stock rims (which complete the look) out of the picture.

The problem with most of those types of "Back up to turn" toys is that the wheels only turn one direction. And therefore would need a lot of work to get them to turn the other direction.

Yep figure a new tx/rx, servo, and maybe an esc to make it work. Along with a new steering linkage system.
Lotta work but hey that's part of the hobby.

It can be done, I've rebuilt three of those Wally World Jeeps and a 21st Century Humvee over to regular electronics. Only thing left stock on them was the drive motors.

Ditto a whole slew of 1/6th and 1/9th tanks. Makes a world of difference in how they perform.
