FM - Midwest L-19 and Min- X Galloping Ghost


Ok, time to do another build log of re-living my youth. This one will be on the Midwest L-19 I had in high school. The same time as my Falcon 56. I had a Min-X Pulsmite GG with a Rand LR-3 actuator and an Enya 09 engine.

I did find a Min-X GG system and that is on its way and an Enya 09 already here!

I could not find a Midwest kit but I did have a copy of the plans. I used my CAD program to create a set of plans that I could build from. It'll take a few days to get the shop ready and start building.

I'm also considering using electric power. We'll see.

Do you by any chance have the full size windshield template for this?

Wonderful project! Thank you for posting the CAD plans, the great old pics, and the classy Min-X transmitter.

I hope you go with the Enya 09...great little engine. I've got two good used ones from ebay and they run perfectly. Here's my Petite Parasol from a 1966 MAN article that I still have...

Revised the full size pdf drawing to include windshields and a few typo errors. See OP.

Spent some time cutting out the parts, thus making my own kit. I print out the plan, then cut it up and use 3M 77 spray to attach the plans to the wood. Then I cut out to the lines and remove the plan from the wood.

I did have some 5/16 wood for the LE. The spars, LE, TE, and LE sheeting have all been cut out. The stab, fin, and rudder pieces have been cut out. I made up the 2 fuselage sides, 3/8 frame, bottom sheeting, LG mount, and stringers.

Tomorrow the ribs and the formers.

All the ribs, formers, and misc. fuselage pieces are cut out, sanded and ready to build with. I'm too tired to take pictures. I'll provide them tomorrow.

The stab, elevator, rudder, and fin are built. They have been sanded smooth but still need to be rounded off.

I built both wing panels and the center section is now drying.

Moving along!

The wing is done. Just some very minor detail sanding then it will be ready to cover. It weighs 2.71 oz (77 grams) as it sits.

I'm including a picture of the stab, elevator, fin, and rudder too. The edges have to be rounded off on these.

On the wing where the panels meet the center section and where the main panel begins its taper, I added a false rib to support the LE sheeting.

The wing and tail surfaces need some small detail sanding then the'll be ready to cover.

The weights so far are:

Wing - 77g 2.71 oz
Stab - 7g
Elevator - 5g
Fin - 3g
Rudder - 2g
Total - 94g or 3.31 oz.

It's lighter than I thought. I'm using my heavier wood too!

On to the fuselage.
