BAW 38ep Caravan Build Thread

Got home from work tonight and there it was. The new BAW Caravan 38ep kit delivered personally to my house, by Chris.I won't get started on it till tomarrow, but have next three days off. Nice instruction manual, good hardware, and it looks like it should go together pretty quick. I plan on going with the FedEx scheme.Equip will be: GWS 350C, 3 blade 9x7 prop, 2 pico servos,GWS 300esc, Futuba 6ch receiver and 2s 1200Etech battery pack. Here's a few pics of how it comes.

Tricycle gear with nose wheel steering, and plenty of room in that fuselage and pod for a camera or air drop.

Fuselage sides glued and control rod tubes in place.Rubber cemented rudder and horizontal stab templates onto supplied foam sheet.Be sure and use new knife blade and straight edge when cutting out stab.So far going smoothly. The elevator will be hinged with tape with a 1/8 inch gap between surfaces, no need to bevel cut, and tape seals air gap.

Tail group and gear attached.350C motor installed.Logos downloaded from the BAW site and printed onto the Testors decal paper. Then coated with gloss clear fixative and allowed to dry overnight.Works out pretty well.Still have to paint in windows and detail.

Servos installed with servo tape.Battery will be attached to underside of fuselage with velcro strap and covered by cargo pod.The pod is attached with two rare earth magnets.I know the blind nuts are on the wrong side of the supports, but the nylon wing bolts are not long enough to put them on the other side. They should hold up fine, since the wing struts are functional and this is not a high speed aerobat.I hope! LOL
Also found out my decals are not sticking very well to the foam, have to think of a better way.

Looking good Xmech! Are the aircraft numbers painted on? I have done the blind nuts on 6 of the prototypes the same way you did and have not had one fail yet.

The "N" numbers are decals also.If they don't stay on I may need to put a clear coat of acrylic over the top of them.Did you have any trouble with the decals sticking?I'm installing the wing strut anchors now, and painting the prop silver.

Did you "sand" the plane down with a paper towel? That will remove the angel hair and allow the decals to stick better. If that does not work spray the decals with foam safe adhesive. $3 bucks at Walmart, the can is Purple and is 3m brand. I tried painting the prop as well. It looked good but the paint will flake off after running the motor. Try a testors marker stick. Did you paint the tail as well?

Didn't sand on fuselage much, the large decals seem to be sticking fine, just had trouble with the "World on time" one; long and narrow.Figured paint may peel on prop, don't tell my wife I'm using her kitchen table to support prop while drying.

I would love to see how she flys with the 350. I have only used the 300. Should be interesting.

Ready for test flight. CG came out right at 1.5" from leading edge with 2s Etech 1200 battery. AUW is 13.8 oz.Will try to get a flight in if wind calms down.
