I must admit, my whole desire to do this scheme came from a combination of seeing Mercer's UGA plane and Clint Sweets. Had you all seen Clint's work? http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=64649

Chris~ How do you typically go about applying decals? Is there a proper method to ensure everything stays lined up, or do you typically eye-ball it?

Most of mine are different on each side. So I usually eyeball it.

I have been using your advice, marking reference points, lining up, piece at a time... Very helpful! While I did not execute perfectly, it is coming along well.

I am curious, how do you go about placing a graphic over a hinge line? In the case of the ailerons, does it look best to seal the hinge with the decal, or to cut the decal?

In the case of my rudder decals, I have the hinge and the counterbalance of the rudder to deal with... not sure where to even begin to get this right.
more pics coming...

I lay them over the hinge then just cut down the middle and let it lay where it hits. should be free of the hinge.

Ditto - but also use a ruler to make sure the cut is straight

Not perfect, but I did get both sides pretty close to symmetrical. Marking reference points as you suggested is the only way to do this, but it also takes some practice and a more steady hand than a normal covering job. I imagine I will only get better at this... The only change I would make so far would have been to go larger with the piece on the tail, or at least put it higher. Both sides are aligned perfectly with each other on the tail.

I have a few more additions to add, including decals on the hood and canopy. Not sure if I will go with the stripes as suggested in the plan above, if I will use the school seal, or a block lettered "GEORGIA TECH". Also plan to add some graphics on the bottom of the ailerons and on the SFG's. Then find a pilot...
