Brace rigging
Here's a page with a good summary, in diagrams, of square sail rigging patterns.
See the brace rigging info. Shows brace pattern similar to that shown in Syren rigging plans - braces to a point in the upper mast, not directly down to the pins. http://www.jans-sajt.se/ |

Well... The nipples and spokes arrived. They were not a success. I planned to cut the spoke a small distance above the thread, and make an eye there. The shroud would attach to the eye. However, the spoke wire is too thick and stiff to bend it into an eye of an acceptible size. I tried filing a flat spot on the wire, and drilling a hole, but the hole I can drill is too small. Than I pounded the tip of the wire with a hummer, and created a flat spot of bigger area. There I could drill a serviceable hole. The problem is that I need about 120 of those things for my four masts. I just can't see myself doing all that pounding and drilling. Another thing I tried was bending a thin wire (I used a large paperclip) over the spoke to create an eye, and brasing it to the threaded part of a spoke. This looks like the method I will use, if I cannot come up with better alternative. I also thought of getting a brass wire of the same size as the spokes, cutting a thread at one end of it, and pounding/drilling the other end. It would be a lot easier to work with brass than with steel.
I will post the pictures of my experiments soon. |

Get some brass rod or studs in a size matching the spoke thread.
http://www.mcmaster.com/#brass-threaded-rods/=mcnfxv Then make a crusher to flatten one end of the stud into uniform flat spots. Use a big pair of old pliers or similar tool. File a flat into the tool to give the desired thickness of the flat when the tool is fully squeezed. |
