Avro Shackleton ground run

Hi all,

On Dec 15th 2012 we're due to carry out a ground run of Shackleton WR963 at Coventry Airport, UK, if anyone is interested. Its a scheduled run as part of our upkeep of the aircraft as she has been quiet now since September, which is a little longer than we would like. Access is through the airport's West Gate, follow the signs for 'Airbase Classic Flights' or the DC6 Diner.

The run is usually carried out around 1300hrs, but you're welcome to get there a bit earlier if you choose. Bear in mind that now Airbase is closed as a museum, your entry won't cost you anything but you will be restricted somewhat on where you can walk about in the immediate area.

This is not a taxy run, as there's still a few little niggles to be resolved with No 2 engine before we can wake it up, so the run will be of three engines only. Taxy runs are still on the cards though for next year, as the aircraft is staying at Coventry.

WR963 will be open for inspection, but we will be asking for a donation on the door of the aircraft. As is our custom there are no barriers inside or outside, so if you fancy a sit in the Boss's chair or want a close up look at a particular widget, be our guest and do so. There may also be spaces available on the aircraft during the run itself.

So - if you have a passion for old RAF piston engined heavies, and want to see one still running and close up, come on over and help support Avro Shackleton WR963!

Kind regards,

Hi all,

I know some of you are already following our efforts to return WR963 at Coventry to flight. Well, we're now planning something a little interesting as a fundraising measure.

We've started a Kickstarter project - basically a crowdfunding attempt - to help raise funding for NDT and structural inspections, and the Trustees have come up with some great rewards for backers of the project.

Smaller rewards include taking the co-pilots seat during a run-up of the engines, and engraved Griffon pistons. The biggest and best reward is the offer of taking the co-pilots seat during a taxy run of the aircraft this summer.... as far as we're aware there's nowhere else in the world the public can get their hands on the throttles of an Avro 4-engined heavy, and nowhere you will get chance to taxy the aircraft from one of the best seats in the beast!

Here's the link -

Kind regards,
