Edf rc missile


Hi there.
Inspired by the Flying Sidewinder missile decided to build a similar thing but with some exchanges, one of them being the edf.

the body is made from fiber glass and carbon rods and is rock solid, the wings are the weak link made from balsa.
kinda of expected it to explode if it falls on the side.

The components are going inside the body with the CG closer to the front wing for an hopefully more airplane like control once it gains speed.

components:
70mm edf with 1.5kg trust
battery 2x 2S 1600mha 45C
50A controller
weight 850g 890g 940g
wingspan 630mm
3 axle gyro
v-tail mixer

Its a bit heavy so im considering choosing a side for flight and stick some epp foam on those wings with a more airfoil like shape and a bit more wingspan.
tried to make everything as aerodynamic as possible as speed is going to be very important to compensate the short wings.

Update 2

finished the first hoovering test and there are good and bad news
the good news is that it has plenty of lift and the controls are very responsive.
not so good is the power it consumes..

On the video you can see halfway that it starts to lose control when i push the throttle a bit more.
after the test went checking the batteries and they were completely empty 6.2v each.
charge them fully and did a hoovering test only counting the time, 70 seconds and they were completely dry again.
it must be consuming around 50A 750w just to hoover, its just to much, no wonder no one ever try to do something like this
next step, buy an 80A controller and two 1800mah 65C 2s batteries, meanwhile gonna try to calibrate the gyro.
still my flight time will be limited to around 40 seconds before having to land

Increased back wings area by 3 times
it should increase the total lift by 2 times tho changing the CG to the back
the weight also increased 40g.
Im thinking about drilling holes on the wings and place some thermoplastic instead.

your stil underestimating the power of speed, my model has around 2x 550mm wingspam (front and back) and 850g for comparison.

Well, if you wish to try, try it. But there are a few things that you can check if it in theory flies
1. Wing Loading. ( not relevant if you only want to fly vertically)
2. Thrust to weight ratio ( I think your are fine)
3. Lift (airfoil? Wing area?)


I have made such mistakes before. Please don't follow.

Definitely gonna do some changes to increase wing area, hopefully it would be enough.

It looks much better. Looks very fly able now. I'm still waiting to see if an edf can push this thing with such a tiny column of air buy if it can it'll sure be sweet, look and sound awsome!!

the colun of air is indead realy tiny, it can't have any obstruction in is path.
it consumes alot of power too for the lift, 3-4 minutes is the max expected flight time. it does sond pretty awsome tho

Something is wrong if your sucking a battery dry that quickly. I've heard edfs scream way louder and higher pitch than that and flew for a few min at wot. Also if your sucking them dry after 40-70seconds they should most Definatly puff if not explode!

But aside from that that way awsome and way better than I expected from an edf! Very cool! Now just solve the drain issiue and find the mAh/flight time to weight ratio that works and your in the air!!!

just did an no load test of the engine with the fan removed and it puls around 6A full throtle and shakes quite a bit, is that bad?
the engine is quite big, 28mm diameter and 130g 2700k and around 37500 rpm

i have another one just like this but difent brand, gonna do the same tests in a couple days to see if there is any diference

If its shaking its out of ballance or there is a defect in the shroud or blades. That will cause it to pull more amps and decrease power too.

ok, played around a bit with the engine is bad, 6A idle itīs to much, tested the himax instead, but it is very low Kv of 2300 so not even an 6 cell was enough.

i have my eyes set on a Arc 28-38-2 3750kv 80g that should be quite good and without overheating.
