I purchased a Commander EP back in May 2013 from The Wing Maker. Long story short, it was forgotten down in the basement until today. I need a winter project for when the weather get warm again.
From reading this thread, it has the older motor - good enough for the first flying season? There is glue on the canopy magnets which needs to be scrapped off - should additional magnets be installed or just install a latch? Anything else to be aware of? Thanks in advance. |

I have the Commander for 3 years now and still love it. It flies extremely well, considering it is only a foamie.
What I have done to it is adding a latch to the canopy as there are a few reports about losing the canopy while doing some heavy manoevers. I just glued a small block of plywood into the foam, just behind the top of the canopy and screwed a servo arm onto that block. No more problems and done within 10 minutes. I also replaced the landing gear as the original one was of horrible quality. It already broke while installing it! I bought a fibreglass landing gear and that was some money well spent. No more issues since. I also replaced the motor. The one supplied was not really good, it made some strange noises, so I put another one in which I had lying around. The rubber band, which would keep the wings together, also had to go. I added some plywood, drilled some holes and added 2 blindnuts. Now I can screw on the wings. Probably the rubber band would have worked as well, but I simply didn't like it. That might be all that I have done to it. You will not regret your purchase, I guess... |

Digging up an old thread but hopefully folks are still around.
Building my second Commander 40 (Air Master) and bought the full completed combo this time. The last one I had met its end on the maiden flight after I tried to do a mix on a Spectrum 5ch receiver to have dual ailerons and it crashed on takeoff. This one was built great, loved the combo. With my Admiral 4s 4000mah batteries that weigh 400g all the way forward it is still tail heavy. Since the only thing back there I would have done is glue the tails on and decals I don't get how it turned out that way. I ordered some RCBattery 4500mah that weigh 459g and will be able to move them back for CG but I am disappointed about the extra weight. Pretty sure it will still fly really well though but it is odd that some of you were able to balance with the much lighter Hyperion 3300 packs. Also, Riot, where did you get the flared piece you added to the rudder in post #40? The only problem I noticed is the wing tube is about 3/16" - 1/4" too long to let both wings seat properly but a few seconds on a sander will cure that without issue. Looking forward to a maiden flight soon. |
