Proposed "Britplan Build Off" 2013
The “Britkit Build Off” which ends on 31/12/2012 has proved reasonably popular, with 35 entries posting 32 build logs, which have been enjoyable, instructive and in some cases extremely entertaining. It looks likely that there will be some 23 finished models of huge variety by the closing date, ranging from a delightful 2 ounce electric R/C Dandy to a mighty 112” scaled up I.C. powered KK Junior 60 R/C, covering almost all types between and representing all the major kit manufacturers of the period. On the whole I would regard this as being a successful and worthwhile “contest” which has encouraged the production of some excellent models.
Thinking about a follow up to this build off, IF it is evident that there is some support for the idea, I propose to administer a “Britplan Build Off” commencing on 1st January 2013. As with the previous two build offs I have administered, this is a "contest" in name only - no prizes except the satisfaction of producing a nice model, the pleasure and interest that your efforts bring to fellow modellers and, at the end, the accolade of being voted for by them. I am fairly clear on the rules, which are essentially the same as the Britkit Build Off: Model built from any plan published in any UK “professional” UK magazine (i.e. NOT club and society newsletters) before the selected qualifying date. By plan I mean a full size feature plan OR a plan shown in reduced size and subsequently sold full size by the magazine OR a detailed reduced size structural three view for which no full size plans were offered. The model may be original size OR scaled up or down. The model may be powered by the original method or by any alternative – e.g. rubber or IC power converted to electric, IC power converted to rubber etc. The model may be flown as originally designed or converted to another flying method – e.g. F/F or C/L to radio, radio to F/F or C/L etc. Here is a list (NOT exhaustive) of qualifying magazines: Aeromodeller, Model Aircraft, Ian Allen Model Aviation/Planbook series, R.C.M & E, Hobbies Magazine, RAF Flying Review (yes, it did have a model section, they published some Bill Dean designs like the Rogue). This lot should produce many hundreds of plans to choose from whichever qualifying date is selected. (To forestall queries, Radio Modeller only commenced publication on 01/01/1966) So what I am looking for from YOU is: Expressions of interest so I can gauge if it is worth running. Your preference of qualifying date and closing date for the build off from those listed below: Qualifying publication date: 1. Before 31/12/1949 OR 2. Before 31/12/1959 OR 3. Before 31/12/1965* *Explanation; many really attractive single channel radio models were published in the first half of the sixties, it would be nice to have them available. My personal preference would be 2 or 3, I think 1949 is too restrictive. What do YOU think. Build off closing date: 1. 30/04/2013 2. 31/06/2013 3. 31/12/2013 I have no real preference on the closing date. So, let me know what you think over the next couple of weeks, then, like the Government, having "consulted" I will make a unilateral decision!!. |

Count me in George. My preference would be for 1959 cut off and the June 13 end date. That should still leave time for the 1960-65 models for later in the year.
I've already chosen my Britplan but will keep it under wraps for the time being. Britkit has been great so no doubt Britplan will be too. Thanks for your hard work in organising and guiding the "contest." Many useful ideas and tips have been posted that make this much more than a "dry" competition. |

Excellent, George. Should be as much fun as your previous two.
Since you asked, my own cutoff date preference would be the end of 1959. This is an oldtimer thing we're doing here and somehow it seems to me that model design suddenly changed with the start of the 1960s. Maybe it was RC becoming more popular, maybe it was that just about everything changed in the sixties, I don't know. But I can usually easily tell sixties designs from fifties and earlier, just from looking at them, even if I'm not familiar with the particular model. "Oldtimer", for me anyway, seems to have ended with the 1950s. And another thing to perhaps consider is that even with an end-of-fifties cutoff, there is a truly enormous number of Britplans available so it may be good to limit the selection in some way, if only to make the choice of model a bit easier. For buildoff closing date, I would say end of the year. Britkit seemed to work very well, and some guys can't build at certain times of the year. Whatever you decide, I'm in. Thanks for doing this again! |

Great stuff George! As you know, I have a Paageboy lined up and ready to start
BUT, I actually think it would be fun to make it pre 1950. I am sure there are lots of excellent and interesting models in that era that a lot of us have never even looked at? I would also favour a mid year finish - one seems to get more done if the finish isn't too far away. It also gives scope for another build off later in the year. Thanks for inspiring us all Al |

I will definitely be in this thing once it starts. As for the options part, I'm thinking exactly the same thing Raf_Bob is thinking. Six months is a long time for a build. I may be different than some, but if I'm honest, there is a lot of time I could be building when I'm not. And... I rest assured there would still be those who would have three completed entries in that amount of time (you know who you are!).

Me, I like the end of '49 as a cutoff as there were so many interesting designs to that date - but it bars the popular and ubiquitous Senator?
I had a 1943 design in mind but I've excluded myself from the event as I had nothing to do this December so, rather than wait a month.. I started work on it. However I look forward to seeing the choices of others in due course |

I’m a poor one to ask for a time frame….I never seem to get finished!
However, I really love to always start something new, maybe even more than one. That being said, here are my choices. Qualifying publication date: 3. Before 31/12/1965* Build off closing date: 3. 31/12/2013 John |

Put me down for 2 or 3 George, as for the finish date, I don't mind I can build pretty quickly when sufficiently enthused! By the way Applehoney, you may find the Senator is excluded anyway because it's a kit plan and not covered by George's suggested sources. Gary
