I drew some roughs for MA, she's a neat bird. Red Baron too.
Very little of MA is Mustang. Mostly fuselage from firewall back, and the fin. Wings and stab were from Learjet as I recall.

Correct, the wing and horizontal tail came from a Lear 24, the Rolls Royce Griffon came from an Avro Shacelton bomber, and the main landing gear came from the Piper Aerostar. The fuselage is indeed a D model Mustang (hand built from drawings), and the vertical stab and rudder was built from the H model (technically the Piper PA-48 Enforcer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piper_PA-48_Enforcer) drawings (which, hint, hint, would be an interesting airtplane to model). It did not have the P-51 belly scoop, rather it had a bulge with a NACA duct.

The airplane was built just down the ramp from a project I was working on, and occasionally I would lend a hand. Once it flew, It was a common sight in the air during it's developmental testing. It did not look at all like a P-51 on the ground or in flight. The swept wing and tail really changed the appearance, as did the super long nose. It was so unconventional that it was almost not pretty. Beautiful yes, but perhaps not pretty. It was really hard to nail down how this airplane made you feel when you saw it fly. My connection to the airplane is one of the reasons I wish to model it some day, I guess.

Cheers,
Rick

Thanks D!

Afaik, there were only 2 pa48's completed and tested. One is in a storage yard, not sure where no2 is. A customer of mine was in the military at the time ,working on testing. He snagged a maintenance manual, and printed me some really good photos of it.

It probably used a stock H tail, more than likely wirh metal covered rudder.

If I recall correctly, half of the stab let go in the turn and MA went into a neg G situation and went in....

Looking good, Mark. PM always sounded good and looked fast, out at Reno.
I've always loved that Contra sound! Here's a clip you may have seen before. It captures that sound in a very rare airframe. I'll keep an eye on your build.

Cool link, thanks! Notice the prop R's, they don't change much.

I have the stab mounting done, and planked the top rear of the fuselage. Picked up two HS82MG servo's for the rudder and elevator. Also grabbed the joiner/horn for the ele.

Did some reading on the props in that Nasa article, and it looks like no real problem with the two props being the same diameter, so I grabbed an 11-10 for the rear prop. I have an 11-8 Reverse on the front.

Also grabbed a 3" spinner for placing the firewall in the right spot ......

Will the spinner need to to be longer than the typical 3" spinner to accomidate both props?

I have to work that out I'm thinking of trying to use a cut GP unit for the rear part, and possibly a smaller one for the front part, or make a foam and glass one due to LH rotation...
