Well, I just seen this over at RCU. Whats it's story. Good trainer or no? Say's it's for 14 to 18 lbs so the 750 may work. Opinions, Elan or this?

It's ok. But you are talking about +$1300 for a wood kit. (with shipping)

The Elan is composite. The sprint is wood, and up until last night... it would have only cost you $810.

Thanks, i'll stick with the Elan. I love composites, and it will still slow down.

ahh ha ha! Better than an Elan!? I Dont Think So...

I dont recall any thread about the Elan, going on for hundreds of pages on how to fix the endless amount of problems like the Tornado.

You get what you pay for. a $200 plane thats riddled with problems vrs a $1200 plane that builds out of the box perfectly and was designed from the ground up to be a turbine plane.. Not a prop plane.

"best" for the RAM 750

There's a unique situation here...the Elan will have more room for the older, heavier RAM 750 turbine. The Modellbau Tornado is a purpose-built turbine plane that looks great, but it likely isn't the "best" for THIS application.

Read Dr. Honda's comments earlier.

Av8erSteve: Stick with your plan! The Elan, while slightly more expensive initially, will give you a TON of great, worry free flights with your RAM 750!

Keep us up to date by starting a "build thread" that you can update with pictures and posts about flying your Elan! I'm a turbine newbie too and would love to see your progress.

Thanks!
Al.

Will do. I have already started saving for the Elan. If all goes as planned, jet will be here around the end of Jan - first of Feb. Retracts will be next, and then the build will begin. I plan on doing a mini build log from opening the box, to maiden. I have never done one and have wanted to for a while. Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm sure to have more questions as I proceed into my "turbine transition" LOL.

Good stuff! In the mean time you can get a head start by looking at this build thread.

Pay particular attention to the middle photograph in post #14

What color scheme are you going with.. I had the Grey Navy with orange and it was difficult to see way out there especially on cloudy days.

Glad you said something. That was the color scheme I was thinking of. I believe I will go with this one.

I do wish they offered yellow and black though.

The tornado is built just.as strong and for turbine and is probably half the price.

Good for you! Believe me, it was a pretty slow process for most of us. It just got crazy after that first successful flight.

Not even close. How do I know? I've built and flown both. The Elan is MILES ahead the Tornado in build quality and flying characteristics. I would spend the extra money on the Elan without even thinking about it.

Another good jet trainer that has not been mentioned her is the Reaction 54 from BTE Models.
It is a kit, you get a huge box of lumber with all parts hand cut and fit together perfectly.
The engine is still mounted externally but is located between the wing and fuse so it looks nicer yet is easy to work on.
There is also a composite ARF version of the Reaction 54 that can handle a bigger engine. This is also a very popular first jet.
