Are there good hotels in Gainesville? Don't want to deal with bedbugs and certainly dont want to take any home.
I could put a bug bomb in the room lol.

Looks like there are plenty of options in Gainesville- not to mention more restaurants, nightlife etc.

Is camping allowed?

We went there the fort year. Is a good 10 miles south. I'm gonna call the hotel tomorrow and see what they have to say

About 15 minutes from the flying field.

I have stayed at the Holiday inn express and the Homewood suites, would recommend both!
There are many more at exit 384 off Hwy75 ( Archer rd) about 20 minutes from the flying field, there is also plenty of shopping and dining nearby.

After further research, I have removed any hotel reccomendations from the web site. There are at least 4 motels at I-75 exit 399, which is about 2 minutes from the field, and many more at the various Gainesville exits (390, 387, 384 and 382) just south on I-75.

Jeez guys, the Quality Inn and the Econolodge are both fine. The price is right and the field is only 5 minutes away. Everybody wants to pay $39.99 for a room and then is surprised to find ducks in the pool and a guy pounding a hooker in the next room.

It wasn't that kind of "pounding" going on though

Seriously though...

I apologize for taking this thread in the wrong direction. My room last year at the QI was horrifying though and I have stayed in some really ugly places before. I had my wife traveling with me as well, so I got about thirteen hours worth of ear full on the way back.

I really didn't mean to say anything too negative, just to give a warning to those who may want to drive a few more minutes to stay in a nicer place.

IIRC it was about 15 minutes down to the Gainesville stuff.

A hotel room is a tool to sleep, not unlike ballast is a tool to get back home.
Its fine there guys. Just take a warm shower when you get home if you feel.

My futon is available for anyone who wants to stay in Gainesville. Cannot guarantee my kids wont be scarier than the Quality though!

Turns out kids and wife going out of town for the weekend so that means I will have two rooms and beds with no bedbugs! Don't be shy, would be happy to host a couple of HLG enthusiasts at my home.

I am gonna make an attempt to highjack this thread.
Looks like enough pilots have signed up to keep me safely out of the flyoff.
About two months to go.
Dave and crew put on a great show and the field is fabulous.
It is still quite warm down here, but I am sure we will have some frost to burn down the grass by contest time.
Looking forward to seeing everyone. The Bruce was the last contest for me.
See all of you in Febuary.
Ed
